Erm! Very subjective, in the sense of peace of mind. I’d be more inclined to remove and check rather than all out change as the findings will dictate
Went through frequency of routine maintenance back in November; I've not changed my view. Your M2 is in a high state of tune - 12000 mile intervals are too far apart for critical parts, eg oil, oil filter, and engine air filter. You should have done it way back. Stop treating it as a hack company car, and give it the care it deserves. What will it cost DIY? Circa £230? Make a reminder in you diary for 18000 miles.
Some points of context here: - The car is under warranty, as long as I at least stick to the service intervals, there won't be a problem if one of the systems/components goes bump, if BMW trust the intervals, then who am I to go argue - I don't track the car, I don't even work it that hard, that is impossible on British roads, so the components are not being put under undue strain - The chances of me keeping the car beyond two years? Slim to none, therefore I'm not overly worried about changing the oil/service beyond the recommended intervals to maintain the vehicle as a forever car - Although I'm happy/competent enough to service my old Alfa, I really wouldn't feel confident doing so on the M2 I will whip the air filters out asap and see what they look like, if they are looking manky, a change would be a good idea. Helps with the breathing etc, so worth doing.
I would do as you suggested pop them out, have a look and if in doubt buy a set and replace yourself.
I think all of this leads me to the opinion that I wouldn't bother and just stick to the servicing regime as given. BMW are happy to stand behind this from a warranty perspective and won't give you any extra kudos or thanks for doing anything beyond, other than taking your hard earned cash as a nice dividend. Get done what needs doing and enjoy it until you buy something else!
Had ten mins so went to top up the washer fluid and check the air filters. Easy enough to access, both came out easily. I think I was scarred by the filters out pulled out of the F32 440i, those were changed according to the BMW schedule but were filthy. These look pretty much new considering 18 months and 12k miles. Some dust/debris in the air box, vacuumed that out. Have set a note to check again in 6 months.
Apologies i never said thanks for your views ! G30 is booked in for a service and MoT next month, when its 8 years old. I will then start looking at a replacement. However Mrs Ed also wants to change her X1 and is suggesting she would be happy with something like a Fiesta / Yaris PROVIDED i get a bigger car for the occasions we need to go on longer journeys and / or carry passengers
Continuing to bond with the car, finding more opportunities to jump in and drive it, even for short journeys. Also enjoying the longer journeys in the car, now I've come to us use it more and more, I am finding it is very comfortable place to sit. The recent trip to/from the Lakes was a breeze, then on Thursday I drove it to Bognor Regis for a work trip, usual horrendous traffic on the M3/27, but the car took it all in it's stride. As it was a stay over by the seaside, Mrs W came along for the ride as well, she has now come to terms with me having, and I quote, "a proper boy racer car"..... Although I'm more inclined to call it a mid-life crisis car given my age! Mrs W complains that the boot is too small, me saying "don't pack so much stuff then...." When driving the car on decent roads, the M1 setting is just perfect, certainly for winter driving. The settings give enough of a different feel to make the car change its character, the front becomes even tighter and the rear slightly more playful. The PS4s do an excellent job in pretty much all weather, obviously I am careful if the temp is below 10 degrees, particularly so in the damp/wet weather, but in general my "oh my Lord it is going to spin off the road at the slightest prod of the pedal" feeling has gone, phew. The levels of mechanical grip are simply incredible, the phrase "it is on rails" doesn't event come close to describing the way the chassis holds the road. Even our somewhat crap roads don't manage to upset the balance, only once or twice have I felt it complain over the worst ruts/bumps. The only noticeable complaint, if it can be said as that, is the way the fronts can tramline in occasion, if the surface has a natural line, usually caused by HGVs etc, then the car does pull into that easily. MPG is better than originally expected, this might drop as the warmer (ha!) weather finally arrives, I suspect I will be using M1 more and more as the temp rises and the roads dry. First service is booked for mid-April, just oil and the usual micro-filter, thankfully the money I had back from the dealer will pay for this. All happy so far, looking forward to some summer fun in this car.
I can’t seem to get over 30mpg in my G80. Is as thirsty as my previous F10 M5, that was insanely good in fuel for such a large engine. Used to do 25k a year in my E60 M5, that was quite bad on fuel lol
Not sure if I have posted this review up before, but if you fancy a very in depth review of the M2, this is worth a watch. A side interest, this is my actual car used in the review.
The BMW app monthly reviews are reasonably interesting, gives a decent summary of the journeys for the month. Looks like I used the car more in Feb than any other month so far, 885 miles in total. Went out to Fradley Junction for breakfast and a walk down the canal today, lovely sunshine, although it was pretty cold.
I needed to visit a school in Fulham today, didn’t fancy the faff of trains and the Alfa isn’t ULEZ compliant, so I jumped in the M2 at 5:30am! Reasonably free drive down the M42/40/25/4 and onto the A4 into Fulham. For some amazing mpg figures on the way down, not trying to drive economically, just keeping with the traffic. The return journey was a mixture of M1 mode and then lots of stop/start traffic on the M4, M40 and M42. Not so economical. No dramas at all for either legs of the journey.
How on earth are you getting that mpg My last car wasn’t great, in fact my f10 I think was better on a run but from what I have experienced so far my new one is not great Really good going on your part
I’m genuinely surprised with the relative economy. I was expecting late 20s into early 30s at best. The car has had Shell 99 only and the tyres are at 32psi, so these may help to boost the economy, also, the Stop/Start is on and working well in traffic. Some may say I’m not driving it properly…however, I have some plans for spring and summer that will bring the mpg right down. Wales and Cornwall are on the horizon.
Also, my version of the S58 is detuned to a mere 460bhp (ish) compared to the fuller fat G80. I’d suspect that has a slightly more positive impact upon the fuelling.
Continued to use the car this week, went to Manchester on Wednesday, then back again on Thursday. The car was brilliant in all respects. I parked the car overnight in a Q car park in Manchester, good spaces and security, so was happy to leave it there. Driving in and out of the car park necessitated M1 mode and far too much throttle. Went out to Cannock this morning, a spot of clothes shopping at the outlet place. Stopped for petrol on the way there, found a Toronto Red G87 at the next pump. had a good chat with the owner, he'd lowered it on Evolve springs and added some spacers, definitely made a positive difference to the way the car sits. He'd got the same oil cooler and transmission cooler as mine, seems to be a popular upgrade. Then parked up at the shopping place, far away into the upper corners of the spaces. Came back to find an F87 comp parked next to me. Not sure about the plate mind.... I must get around to cleaning the car. It hasn't had a wash since before my trip to the Lake District in February. However, there is something satisfying about having a decent car that is covered in road grime, shows it is no garage queen!
I see there's a recent revision to the M2 with 20 more horse powers and suspension tweaks. Doesn't sound like it needs it but there is always progression I suppose
