Probably a daft question but ..

When my '98 523i was serviced in May my local garage had mislaid (probably borrowed by a staff member) the service indicator tool, so I attempted to zero the readout with my own aftermarket unit but although both it's indicator lights came on the cluster indicator wouldn't zero. I've tried several times using different procedures (ign. position 1/2/off but without success. It could be a faulty tool but it's only been used once before & that worked first time.

So the question is will any problems arise if the service indicator is not cancelled ?
    TIA guys.

I think you can do it via the dashboard:

I've watched the U-tube vid. & like so many others, covering all manner of subjects, it doesn't work !
I will study the alternative suggestion though

Thank you for your replies 'D'

Yes seems to be for later cars - as a 98 i think its more like an e36 - on my M3 you used a paper clip to short two terminals - i might still have the diagram on my tool board - i'll check tomorrow.

Yes i remember the paper clip or a bit of wire but was a long time ago and can't remember.
Might be worth a google reset with jumper sort of thing.

    According to Gemini:

On pre-2001 BMW E39 models, you can reset the service indicator manually under the bonnet using a jumper wire (or an inexpensive 20-pin reset tool).
    1. Locate Diagnostic Port
    Under the bonnet
Pop the bonnet and locate the round 20-pin diagnostic connector near the passenger side engine bay area. Unscrew its protective cap.

    2. Set Ignition to Position 2
    Dashboard active
Turn the ignition key to Position II (ON position, lights active on dash, but do not start the engine).

    3. Bridge Pins 7 and 19
    Timing is key
Insert one end of a jumper wire into Pin 7 (Service Reset) and the other end into Pin 19 (Ground).
    Hold the connection:
    * Oil Service Light: Hold for 3 to 5 seconds.
    * Inspection Light: Hold for 10 to 12 seconds.

    4. Remove Jumper and Seal
    Final step
Remove the wire, replace the diagnostic port cap, and turn off the ignition.
Verification: Turn the key back to Position II; the cluster lights should return to a row of full green bars.

Sorry for the delayed report WL, it didn't work despite my following your posted instructions to the latter. The coloured lights illuminate & go out on the reset device as described but the cluster service indicator refuses to change.

I'm not in fact that concerned as only covering around 5K miles of predominately local journeys I have the car serviced annually regardless, just want to check if any problems will eventually arise if the service indicator is not reset ?

    Thank you for your input.
