I have just completed a 2350 mile trip back to the Uk from Bosna and Hercegovina in 4 days using RTTI for the first time.

I've done the return trip there at least twice a year for more years than I care to remember and know the kind of delays, congestion ,and diversions that I regularly encounter on the route through nine countries.

I have to say that I am totally underwhelmed by RTTI compared to the standard TMC which I normally have.

Yes there is a load more info on the screen compared to what I was accustomed to but almost all of it had no relevance to my journey.

TMC displayed icons for hold ups, congestion, and road works only along my route - whereas RTTI gives me little icons all over the screen.

    IMG-20180516-WA0002[1].jpg

I get the same coloured section on the left hand menu - red, amber, etc as before.

There seems to be no way to toggle between TMC and RTTI so I could not compare the situation vis a vis exactly what the differences would have been at any precise moment.

I have the setting correct to receive the max info and dynamic guidance.

Just like with TMC, I was diverted several times and received notifications like "Your route is being recalculated due to traffic conditions."

I really don't know if RTTI is worth the annual subscription but I will make a decision at the end of the month's trial.

I have several lengthy trips within the UK coming up in the next few weeks and I'll keep you posted as to my thoughts.

I've also now got BMW Online which seems to be very useful in finding locations using google search.

Finding hotels, restaurants, and supermarkets is now very much simpler than before as one can enter a keyword for the search.

@Singvogel interesting feedback regarding RTTI v TMP. Let us know whether you decide to extend it after the month is up. (y)

Looks like a case of 'too much information' to me. I'm glad I don't have any of that aboard mine - how is a lone driver supposed to make any sense of that when [possibly] hurtling along at 70 mph? Don't we have enough distractions already?

This is all Greek to me. I have a paper road atlas in the car, quicker than a satnav if I need to do a detour.

As long as it will tell you there's a pileup 2 miles up the road, before you pass the last exit. :D

As I said previously it a is ALL ABOUT SETTINGS. On my X3 with pro sat nav, and I do not see any of the icons shown above except for the white disc that means road closed at that point. I see the red and amber lines shown on the side of the roads and nothing else. Most of the time I use dynamic route guidance.

You do all know that RTTI uses all available mobile phone signal positioning/movement for the data?

Think i read that RTTI also uses the movement info received from other BMW's transmitted via the in car SIM card

Yes. Agreed. The BMW Genius advised me of this, but if it relied solely on these, there would be no data from some areas.

Anyway I must now correct my above statement. I have been away in Thailand for almost a month and took the car out for a short run and I now DO See all the icons.
I do not show all the map full screen because by relying purely on verbal instructions I find it is easy to miss the turnings on the multiple exit roundabouts. Instead I run continuously in split screen mode with the graphic view in the right hand screen. It stops multiple go round the roundabouts. before going down the correct road.

And I can now read and reply to emails.

And I can get the news in English read to me as I drive across Europe. :D

I actually miss my old push-button radio that I had in my E28 - it had shortwave.

Well the month is up and the system has reverted back to TMC only.

I am very happy as now my map display is uncluttered with all the little triangles telling me about road works that are nowhere near my route.

I could detect no advantage in having RTTI as the TMC does all that I need - informing me of traffic hold ups and offering diversions/re-routing when it could be a benefit.

Hand on heart I can honestly say that I saw no benefit from having RTTI over the last 4000 miles.

Needless to say I shall not be paying £40 a year to continue it.

    I am now left with:

    ConnectedDrive Services

    Remote Services

    BMW Online

    USB Map Update

    TeleServices

    Intelligent Emergency Call

Thanks for the feedback, Bob. I shall probably heed your advice when mine is due for renewal. (y)

Just an update on the RTTI v TMC question.

I'm still more than happy with 'only' TMC.

I get all the info I need and it updates pretty quick.

I had a couple of last minute diversions today which saved me a bit of time.

Here's a pic that shows that I still get relevant info for my route (note the yellow traffic situation report on the left hand side) and what's going on roads around me:

I can't see how RTTI could help me more than TMC - both in the UK and in mainland Europe.

Note the temperature reading on the Wayfinder - 27degreesC in Aberdeen today - who says Scotland is cold?
