Seems likes it's already a roaring success! Decided to take advantage of a 24hr loaner and got in touch with my dealer to see if I could organise one for mid-August when I'm back for three weeks.

    This was his reply:

    Hi The CO,

    I hope all is good.

Unfortunately BMW have been caught out by the success of the X3 M40i and cannot keep up with demand. Consequently they cancelled all orders for demonstrators so the build slots could go to customers.

We have put a request in for one as soon as possible.

I will make a note and let you know as soon as one is available.

    Best regards,

    Bloke.

Impressive stuff, the reviews have been good and owners also seem to be very happy with them. Personally, I don't think an SUV is the right car for me but after extensively testing Macans I'm really curious to see how it measures up performance-wise. Mrs CO likes SUVs so you never know but I'm hanging out for the rumoured M340i..

Think the new X3 is now more size wise like the old X5...
And if your not pulling a giant caravan or boat....( in which case you'd probably have a discovery) the size is more suited to the average joe public much more than the X5...
Plus with a hearty petrol engine to boot, it's going to have the SUV vans flocking....I would have thought....??
It's not gonna be cheap though when you've added a few BMW desirables...
Not for me I'm afraid....I'm much more sports cars and vans myself....

I priced one up for funsies - damn near £60k with all the guff I like to have. That's big money for any car.

And I don't expect we'll be able to pick up a well optioned example for about £35k in a years time either.

Saw one recently and compared the interior to mine - yes different, but not a massive difference in quality. i certainly didn't feel short changed when jumping back into my lci X3.
Always said the X3 is the sweet spot between parkability, sportiness and practicality. What i'm not so sure about now , is calling it a sports car, before acquiring the Porsche it felt nimble, quick and i was believing the hype around it being "sporty" . when i get back into it nowadys - it feels comfortable, quiet, relaxed and an excellent cruiser (i certainly wouldn't be without it) ... but never sporty.
Do you need a high powered petrol derivative in a SUV? probably not - when it's time to change, I will probably opt for a petrol X3, but maybe not the all singing engine.

I have the equivalent Audi (new SQ5 petrol) and find it is all I really want from a car. Discrete, refined, comfortable, quick, not too bad on fuel..... and really good inside.

It was over £50k but residuals are £26k at 4 years / 40k miles...

That was my thinking Peter, do you think not then? My GT was £57K and I picked it up a year old for £34k, I was looking at the same again for the X3 M4.0i. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I consider myself converted from Saloon to Suv
Had a Petrol Suv been available I’d be all over it!
I’m sure the next change will have me in a Petrol Suv

I think X3 residuals will be the issue. They hold up well, as demand is much greater than our 'luxo' barges. :D

That mirrors what I have been thinking for a long time. I would be drawn to the X3 3.0i if they every released it in the UK as a RH drive version. It is still a 4 pot 2.0 litre engine, but with similar performance to the X3. 30d. See..

I know it will mean going OT a bit, but what would your main reason be for preferring petrol?

Something special about a petrol SUV. Particularly if you can have a BMW 6-pot engine. X5 V8 even better! (y)

My wife's cousin had an E83 X3 30i, what a sweet combination. Then we lost the petrol options in the UK.

Sorry, I'm no petrol head (...) but what is that 'something special'?

Maybe we should have (another?) petrol v diesel thread?

Petrol is just so much smoother - the six and eight cylinder BMW petrols are like turbines. So much more refined with a beautiful exhaust note. I really do miss the 3 litre straight six I had in my 330Ci's and the 4.8i V8 I had in the 550i.

I'm not at all surprised that the X3 M40i has been so much of a roaring success. The UK market having been starved of the petrol Units from the X3 through the last run and with the current anti-derv sentiment further "fuelling" (sorry for the pun) appetite.

X5 and X3 residuals have been amongst the best in the range since launch. I agree with Peter that it will be very difficult to get a bargain even at three years old.

As mentioned, refinement is better, but it is much more than the NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) levels. There is something that stirs the emotions about a petrol engine, from idle through to revving it out. Even the start up of a V8 petrol is an event.

Not knocking 6-cylinder diesels, but they are more a tool than a soul stirring drive. We had a VW Caravelle VR6 between VW Caravelle TDI models. I know which one I enjoyed driving most of all. Yes the diesels were/are very efficient, but the VR6 was something else, big grin inducing, even in the Caravelle model.

Saw an X3 M40i going through Macclesfield this week - looked OK but no different on initial view to a std M Sport.

I see the new X3 offers a 2.0 petrol engine now as well. We will probably be going SUV when we get rid of the F11 but it will not be new!

Yes. I was invited to the launch day last year (as many were on this forum were) and had same feeling. There is a 3.0i as well (still a 2.0 litre 4 pot petrol) but only released in the USA.
