Cleaned the car yesterday, post holiday. Didn’t get around to sorting the exhaust tip out, covered in tar and soot. Got the wheel cleaner and scourer out this morning, also used some AG Intensive Tar Remover. Before: After: Not a massive improvement but better. Might need some AG metal polish in there. The Matt metal finish isn’t to my taste, would prefer the chrome look. The wife has this on the Audi, cane up nicely today:
I've used this stuff before, its pretty good but does depend how bad the exhaust tips are... unfortunately, mine not been done in a while so not great atm.. Did intend to keep them looking good but best laid plans/ideas etc https://www.amazon.co.uk/Autosol-Metal-Polish-75-ml/dp/B003XJ1ODM Kev
Just washed my car and all 4 tips are looking horrendous so I think I am going to put a set of the gloss black ones from the M5 competition on. If they keep getting black crap all over them I may as well change them to black!!
Autosol is good, as are the Britemax products https://www.britemax-direct.co.uk/metal-polish-uk-c102x2778536 But, @Waynester71 , if the tailpipes trims weren't chromed before, I doubt any amount of polishing will give you the bright, shiny finish you're hoping for.
I know polishing alu matt finish won’t get it to chrome..... Might get some of the pitting off though. There is a BMW option trim for this car, chrome and black I think. Will see how much they are.
I've been using the Autosol metal polish on my wife's (2011) 325i exhaust tail pipes for the past five years and while they are not as shiny as the chrome on my 530i, they are a lot better than when we bought the car, which had clearly never been polished by its first owner. I think regular use of a metal polish will gradually bring your aluminium exhaust tips to finish you will like
Cheers, I’ve ordered some! Will give it a whirl and see what the effect is. Although it will confirm to the neighbours that I’ve completely lost the plot.......
I've been using Solvol Autosol for close on 60 years. It's abrasive, so be careful where you use it. With sufficient elbow grease and a course cloth, aluminium alloy can be given an attractive shine, not the same shine as polished chrome, although it won't be too far off. The trick is to keep rubbing until the polish dries and the shine starts to show through, then finish with a clean, soft cloth. But are those exhaust tips an aluminium alloy? I doubt it.
I don't list a black tip option for yours sorry, but the silver one is £45 just FYI though, I think that will polish up ok with Autosol
I have used Meguirs NXT for a number of years on chrome tips, and its brilliant. Autosol is obviously very good too. Next time try NXT. I think its arguably shinier. I use NXT on my black tips I have now too.
Here is a bizarre idea that I have been told will work - by my mum lol I have been informed that using tin foil to polish up the chrome tips will remove the crap and leave the chrome shiny again. I am going to try it later and if it fails I will use the tin foil as a hat instead!! Pics to follow.
Afternoon. I've found this part on eBay, seemingly from an official BMW account, says it will fit the 2012 E92 320d, does this look right to you? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-Exha...496787&hash=item2ca2d495dc:g:89QAAOSw44BYV9XZ Will have a few goes at the polishing, ordered the Autosol stuff, but think the black chrome would wok well on the Edition Plus with all the shadow line trim.
Not listed my end, but part number is a good one and the car matches Don't pay £50 though, £42.94 from us
Incidentally, if anyone wants (cheap) chrome tips, i have two off my 640d from when i put quads on. Back boxes too, but they were cut off so not a straight forward fit.
