New BMW 5 Series Touring spotted prepping for 2017 launch

Spy pictures show BMW's next-generation 5 Series Touring testing for first time, likely to debut in 2017
BMW is hard at work developing the next-generation 5 Series and now the more practical Touring variant has been spotted on the road for the first time. It's expected to arrive in 2017, shortly after the saloon has been launched.

Although the body is heavily disguised, you can make out the overall shape of the Audi A6 Avant rival. The design detailing and profile are familiar BMW, indicating an evolutionary step on from the current car's design rather than a radical rethink. The conservative route would be similar to that followed by the new[IMG] 7 Series but the squatter appearance and sloping rear window line do hint at a slightly more sporting look for the new estate

Looking forward to hearing how good the new 540i is going to be - the 340i seems to be getting some pretty decent reviews apart from the optional variable ratio steering.

Looks awesome. I've always been a fan of the 5er in pretty much any guise but the Tourings are my favourite. That looks good although I hope that sloping rear roofline doesn't impeded too much on its rear boot space. Unless of course they've made it longer........again!

I too am a fan of the 5 touring, but I'm probably distracted by the fabulously on-trend paintwork , cause (apart from the headlights) to me it looks like it could be almost any estate.

Why does the writer say 'you can make out the overall shape of the Audi A6 Avant'?
    Does it really resemble it?

"you can make out the overall shape of the Audi A6 Avant rival."

As in, you can make out the shape of the new 5 touring despite their camo paint efforts to conceal it - and the new 5 touring will be a rival for the Audi A6 (clickable link which they want you to follow).

Singvogel I'd just love a paint job like that.

I think the finish is Black Hyper swirl mark, whilst it's not a factory option, it's the easiest to replicate after after two months of ownership of sapphire or Carbon Black, and poor wash routine, ideally mastered using fairy liquid and an old bath sponge.
I've seen it with several Marques so it's loses the individual uniqueness!

I used to hate estates / tourers / avants etc, as I age I'm finding myself more and more taken with them, albeit I do love the fettled, slightly lowered and bigger wheels with standard unmolested bodies, thinking it adds the subtle tasteful mod.
The tourer is a contender when the time comes to replace the current, just have to settle on a model!

If the five takes the styling and gadgetry of the Seven, it'll be an impressive piece of mastery!

I would say watch this space! But it shall not be this year! Too many days off work this year to contemplate a change!
Perhaps next year, another GT is a possibility
