I’m just in the process of buying a used 3 series m sport business thingy edition (sorry it’s late), and wondered if I can sync music over the Bluetooth connection or not?
Also what are the warning signs to look for when buying used?

Welcome aboard. The Collective will need more information about your proposed purchase in order to help/advise e.g. model & spec, buying from main Dealer/Independent garage/trader/privately etc etc.

Armed with all the facts I'm sure there will be sound advice available - if you have a specific car in mind, a link would help too.

This would be my first BMW, though I’ve owned a MINI before (loved it!) and had a 1 series as a courtesy car which felt ‘safe’ whilst driving if that makes sense?

    What mileage ?
Timing change needs changing at 80-100k, or could be catastrophic if has a particular engine (cant recall is it N47?)
Don't let that put you off, just something that must be done. Not cheap.

Mileage is 60k exactly, I thought timing chains were good for the life of the car?

I’ve the N47T version in my 2012 320d. Timing chain is an issue for some cars, not all. Oil changes need to be more frequent than the ridiculously long BMW service schedule. There are plenty of people with that engine in way over 100K on the original chain.

The later versions of the N47 had changes to the design to give more confidence, but as always check the service.

2015 was the change over to the B47 engines for the 318d.

Personally I wouldn't be concerned about the timing chain on a 2015 model the vast majority of cars at that age won't have a problem

    Thank you so very much

I just wondered also: would I be able to connect Bluetooth music via my phone and what the average realistic mpg was

My phone is a iPhone X and didn’t have any issues connecting to my previous car (Skoda Octavia)

Our companies 14 plate 318d cost us £4300 because of the timing chain failure. Fully serviced.
A moments notice with a peculiar noise.
    It was c80k miles.
That said many will have lasted more than the 100k service interval.

Better to know that there are a lot of cars that have had the issue.

With 60k miles its a way away for you to worry about.

To reply to your original question. I think you need to have Enhanced Bluetooth to allow music streaming. This can be coded in if you don't have it already.
If you already have enhanced bluetooth there'll be a microphone near the passenger's sun visor. (There should already be a microphone on the driver's sun visor).

Enhanced Bluetooth was an option and was not often selected so a lot of cars only have the standard Bluetooth option which allows some connectivity but not streaming

the N47 2.0LD engines from 2007 until 2011 were the really bad engines for snapping chains the N47 was modified in 2011 and they thought it was sorted but they are still having some issues what you need to consider is that the N47 is one of BMWs most popular engines with millions of units sold worldwide so one would expect a few issues over that number of units sold

l Owned a 5 series with a 2009 N47 motor which was bang in the middle the real problem moors and mine was fine and l would happily buy another car with the same engine as long as it wasn't mega high miles

I just might’ve changed my mind having a guesstimate of what the replacement of a chain cam would cost from BMW, would I be able to change the chain cam prior to any issues to get ahead of myself so as to prevent anything happening down the line with it?

So the ‘new’ one I’ve possibly opted for is identical just with a B47T engine, are there any issues with these?

Labour costs from BMW are extortionate, however a good Indy would be able to replace the chain for a lot less. You could look for peace of mind - a BMW Insured Warranty would cover any chain failure - even before it breaks.

However - there's no need to get too hung up on it, a regularly serviced engine - with interim oil changes is the best preventative maintenance one can do to ensure chain (and engine) longevity. At 60k miles your engine is barely run in.

Agree, interim oil services are one of the best preventative measures on the problem engines. My brother in law ran a 2009 120d with the N47 engine for over 80k miles. After discussing the potential issue with him, he opted to have shorter oil change intervals, was running fine when he sold the car at 95k+ miles. Plus it was driven 'with purpose', not an easy life.

lf you are buying from a main dealers as an approved used car it wll have a full history and 12 months comprehensive warranty

at the end of the warranty period you wll be offered the option to take a BMW insured extended warranty which is about £550 a year on a 3 series if l was gong to run a car with an N47 engine again it would be 100% covered by BMW insured warranty and any chain issues wll be dealt with under warranty
