Hi. Any common fault when losing coolant! Bmw f10 525d the 2.0 one, message today saying low coolant, topped up and now see what happens. Couldn’t see anything obvious around engine bay of any leak when car was running. It’s had the egr cooler replaced in April so I assume they topped the coolant up when they replaced this. Would the car naturally loose any over time or will this be a fault. Something with water issues with this car lately, first the headlight condensation a couple months ago, sorted that then the rear footwell soaked last week, sorted that, now this!
I had this after my EGR cooler was replaced, it needed another EGR cooler but I sold the car instead (to a garage) You won’t see the coolant as it goes out the exhaust pipe from the EGR.
Topped coolant up and it’s now low again after a week. Will have to contact bmw tomorrow see what they say. If it is the cooler again would it get replaced foc again?
They had the car for nearly 2 months so I’d hope they did replace it. Mad thing is I never actually had any coolant loss before it got replaced! Would I be best talking to the dealer or bmw customer services? Not sure who I’d get more sense from when I tell them the issue.
Are you still within warranty? If so I would just call BMW emergency services, that’s what I did and they told me not to drive the car and they picked it up on a low loader.
I think I would talk to the dealer in that case, if you get nowhere then try BMW UK customer services.
Been into dealers today and it’s booked in for “diagnostics” in a couple of weeks so will need to keep it topped up. Hopefully in a way it will be the cooler as it’s been an expensive year with one thing and another and then at this time of year now.
Topped up the coolant today and done 10miles stopped then returning home and not far from home coolant low again so quite a leak. On checking tonight I can see coolant around at the bottom of the engine on the right side ( passenger side ) right below where the top hose off the rad disappears, pooled a little so looks like a leak somewhere rather than the cooler unfortunately! Will need to investigate further in daylight. Just now wondering whether it’s worth taking to bmw or get a local garage to sort it rather than pay bmw prices. On checking tonight also found smoke / fumes coming from oil filler neck! Why do jobs seem to escalate the more you look etc!! The bolt holding the neck was loose so tightened up but fumes still coming out. Must need a new seal on it.
If it happened after being in the BMW workshop then I would be going back to the dealer stating it was fine until you touched it. There work / repairs are warranted
The only problem is it is easy for them to just say it was a part they didn’t touch and if you start poking about they are to claim you made it worse. I just hate dealers touching my car, I have ever found one I have trusted but due to health issues I can do it myself anymore.
Yeah that’s why I have now booked it in on Monday to the garage nearby who has a good reputation to repair as when I’ve checked, it’s definitely not the egr cooler and looks to be the oil cooler leaking where it bolts to the engine as I can see a little oil also. If it went into dealers I’d be charged £160 for an hour diagnostics then repair. I’d normally do it myself but just not got the time lately to strip it down etc.
Car was in today and the garage said it was the plastic piece that the top hose connects to the engine block with which was leaking. They’ve Ordered a new one and coming tomorrow. Total charge £80 can’t complain with that. Should get car back tomorrow! Hopefully that’s sorted and thats my problems over with this car for a while! For the sake of £80 it wasn’t worth the hassle of taking it to the dealers and arguing if it was caused by them or not.
Agreed... Hopefully a nice easy result... with people you can trust... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Got the car back today and all sorted. The plastic jointing piece that connects the top hose to the engine had a crack along it. All sorted. Think I’ll still keep an eye on it for now just for piece of mind but now seems ok. The guy said he originally thought it was a couple of bolts holding it on but on getting the part and trying to remove it he found he had to strip the manifold off to access the 3rd bolt! No extra charge though so good result. Such a relief that it didn’t turn out to be an expensive fix.
Just to add if anyone else is losing coolant from the passenger side of the engine bay it could be same issue and part number is 11127810707 from realoem. Mine had a split in it about 1” along it.
