About time. Great to have a bit more choice, but will a tow bar be optional?

I'm very excited by this, I pray they get it right and it smashes MB and Audi. What an opportunity!

All those years to match the 510PS of the C63S and with less torque....

    Let’s see.

Stiff competition for sure, esp if they produce an M3 Competition to go head to head with the C63s. Fascinating times.

To be fair, the current M3 C is more agile than my C63S (my wife has one), but the AMG wins on absolute power and its monster 700Nm. Lots of people say that one is better than the other, but I disagree - they are just different.

The new M3 will be better, but the C63S being rear wheel drive and having a V8 has bags of character.

This is something the Audi RS4 lacks. I test drove one and was so underwhelmed. It felt too sensible and just like a 3.0 TDi.

It will be interesting to see what BMW come up with, but we all know the Audi won’t stand a chance and the BMW will be better around a track than the current AMG. I just wonder if we will get over the grille issue and then see what really lies underneath.

As you say, interesting time and I am so pleased we won’t be forced to choose high CoG SUVs. Choice is good!

I test drove a B7 RS4 many years and I was surprised at how often I kept bouncing it off the limiter, that thing revved so easily it was astonishing. I loved it but couldn't make the numbers work at the time, haven't driven one since. Very nearly bought a C63 Estate about five years ago but the wife hated it - truly - so that was non-starter. Thought this I lamented the lack of an M3 Touring because I'm convinced I would have had one and now here it comes. Not sure if I'd take the plunge, my needs have changed but if they stick that vertical snout on it I'm definitely out!

I just don’t get it, have they got two separate teams working on the front and back?

Maybe, just maybe (or am I clutching at straws?) it will look better in the flesh?

The M340i xdrive touring is already astonishingly quick (for a 375bhp car) with some tests doing 0-60 in 4.2 secs so this car is going to have to be mid 3's.

I realise the chassis dynamics will be different but where can the extra power and performance be used in Britain?

You have touched on one of my pet subjects

Once upon a time we used to be able to consider 0-60 times (before they got stretched to 0-62) as a way of comparing cars ability to accelerate. Yes more powerful cars took more skill to get off the line, but for every day cars one with a time of 8 seconds, would be faster in normal driving than one with a 9 second time.

Fast forward to today and traction through 4WD has upset the Apple cart a bit, with some cars showing faster times than otherwise you would see and the current 330d is a good example of this.

The (touring) S drive version is rated at 5.6 seconds and the X drive version 5.4 seconds for 0-62mph, this despite the X drive being heavier and is due to the ability of the X drive to get the power down.

For the type of driving that most of us do, I would wager that the X drive will feel like a 5.6 second car or perhaps a tad slower.

This phenomenon can be exaggerated, by manufacturers incorporating launch control which gives artificially low 0-62 times.

So if you look at the M340i with its official 4.4second time (saloon 0-62), the question to consider is what does it feel like to drive?

Compare this to the current M3 comp with its 4.0 second time (from RWD) and you would expect the M3 to feel quite a bit faster in more “normal” driving. Trust me, it does and I speak from experience.

My C63S T model with its 510PS and 700Nm has an official time of 4.1 seconds which is a by product of its RWD only configuration.

The new M3 Competition with 510PS and AWD, will take half a second off that, but I doubt if it will feel faster in normal driving. Either way, it will be far faster than we actually need and you are right, opportunities to use more than 400ps are few and far between.

That said, when I had my 535i I added the MPPK to give 326PS and 450Nm and didn’t feel that was enough for the weight of the car for it to feel genuinely fast.

The M cars do have great chassis dynamics and when I am thinking sensibly, think that a car with the size and chassis dynamics of an M3 with “just” 400PS, might actually hit a sweet spot. We could call it the M340i +

I was talking to the wife the other night (yes I know, you have to sometimes), discussing what comes after the Macan, well now I think the M3 touring would get us back into a BMW. But the elephant is still in the room, BMW customer service, they need to up their game.

If someone on FB has had one stolen then I’m not having one of those cars. Apparently.

Nothing to worry about then, most FB accounts are fake Russian/Chinese/North Korean hackers/agents.
