    Hello All

Up until say mid September the key fob operation would open the rear boot lid in its entirety, quite quickly.

Its not an electric boot lid, just opens from the key fob or using the button from inside the car - and needs to be closed manually without much force...

In recent weeks, it's only opening slightly (just unlocks and stays ajar) or a a third of the way up if i'm lucky.

Started to make my own theories up (not always easy to test), was wondering if a change in climate or rain water on the boot adding slight weight impacts the operation.

    Any thoughts/experience?

    Thanks

As you say, rain water trapped inside bootlid making it heavier?

Or the struts are ageing and not giving the same resistance?

Cheers. I had to google 'struts'! But found some :)

Will keep an eye on it, tbh not causing a big issue but just convenient sometimes!

Try a tad of lotion/potion on the seals as they shall be getting sticky, some say gummy pflege though it’s possibly an unnecessary expense if the struts are indeed weak.
A bowl of hot water a micro fibre and a liberal coating of All purpose cleaner and elbow grease shall clean up the seals

If it's going a third of the way up then stopping it's unlikely to be the seals. I suspect one of the struts has lost a bit of pressure, & the cooler weather means the pressures are a bit lower as well. Mine still goes up on its own, even this weather now. Does it feel a bit limp & does it stay up once lifted? If you're still under warranty I would contact a dealer. If it's out of warranty, try SGS Engineering (in Derby, but mail order too).

Edit: OOPS, sorry, didn't read the title, mines a G30 so comparison comments not relevant.

I put a lip spoiler on mine and found it slowed it down opening, so a slight increase in weight can effect it, but probably one of both struts are weakening.

I replaced the boot struts on the old E60 early this year (mine opens fully on the key fob), but I suppose you could adjust the tension in the springs a bit to get it to open fully.

Thanks for various responses, some useful info....

So I called the BMW dealership where the car has been maintained, as had this issue and a few other things to run through...the chap was really helpful!

Regarding the boot lid, he said something about the gas pressurised springs being replaced in May 2019 (under warranty) ... this would've likely been to prevent the boot lid from dropping/keeping it open with some resistance. Something it's currently doing fine, so happy on that front.

In terms of not popping open beyond say a third, he said it's pretty normal; typically when you open from key fob, should lift enough just to get your hand under and lift fully open etc. Tbh had it of been like that from the outset i wouldn't even of queried!

Think going to park this one for now. Next time will either buy a car with an electronic tailgate, or just stop buying big beer cases, and just get 4 packs I can hold in one hand, and use the other hand to lift the boot lid open manually!

Boot struts combined with the weather. I’ve just had mine replaced under goodwill (long story) but I noticed when I got the car back (last month), temperatures were still quite moderate.

now ( as it’s getting a little bit colder) the boot isn’t coming up as quick or not at all

Bit if a random follow up in case anyone's interested! So slightly warmer weather and no rain, and the boot lid pops up like its electric :)

Hmm, as its so inconsitent seems like another BM design/implementation flaw / 'defect'. Shame as I quite fancied the 6 CG.
The boot on the F10 works fine and even better when coded to remote and or footwell close :)

I had exactly this issue on my first 6GC struts were replaced under warranty but new ones were very much the same. My new 2018 6GC which I got at the end of August seems to be exactly the same... the boot opened pretty much all the way when the weather was warmer. Now in the Dec / Jan weather it pops open and is enough to just about get my fingers in to lift.. So they do all seem to be the same unfortunately cold weather definitely effects the operation. I may get them to look at next time I am at the dealers but no big issue.
