Hello there, I have a 3 pole connection fan fitted to my e39 which is now playing up and wondered if the 4 pole connection would work ok or does it have to be the same 3 pole one.

I think the later ones (LCI onwards?) had a fully variable speed fan with a control signal supplied on one of the wires. This signal controlled a solid state switch to vary power to the fan (hence fan speed). I think the earlier ones may have had a simpler arrangement, maybe just 2 or 3 discrete speeds. I suspect they may not be interchangeable because the earlier car won't provide the correct 'control' signal.

If @Silverbeemer525 is correct [and I suspect he probably is] you could try FABDirect or Quarry Spares (both specialist BMW breakers) for a replacement.
