Hi guy's, I'm looking at buying a BMW 2 Series 228I. Initially I was looking at a 2015 but now thinking about a 2016. On auto trader the adverts for the 2015 says 0-60 @ 5.8 seconds. I've just seen an advert for a 2016 but it says 0-60 @ 8 seconds. Are both 228i models 5.8 seconds or is the 2016 slower?
Hello there. The 0-62 may vary depending upon gearbox, the ZF8 auto is a smidge quicker than the manual. As to AT, I’d ignore most of the tech spec on there, many times I’ve seen ads with the wrong details, always better to go back to the original manufactures quotes figures. This is what Parker’s guide says about the 2016 228i:
Thanks for the quick reply. Could it be down to rear wheel drive and all wheel drive? I heard you can get both types.
I’ve not seen any/many xDrive 228i models in the uk. Might be some out there I suppose, can’t see any on Autotrader currently.
Quick bit of research tells me the 220d was the only xDrive model in the UK. Maybe search for the 2016 BMW sale spec? That will give you the definitive manual/auto specs. 350Nm of torque is a good bit of oomph in the 2 series coupe, should move along at a decent pace. Good luck on the search.
It's a lovely looking car, and good value compared to It's rivals. Where do I get the 2016 sale spec from?
Middle East spec but easily translated into UK/mph: https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/middle-east/article/attachment/T0180034EN/265798
It's easy to be confused by performance figures. In Europe, and I include the UK, acceleration is no longer 0 - 60, but 0 - 62 mph (0 - 100 kph). Top whack is restricted to 250kph (approximately 155mph). The 0 - 60 you see quoted usually comes from the USA - they don't do metric. Can't say I blame them, when you look at the mess the UK has with fuel consumption figures: buying in litres, and then quoting MPG. So the 0 - 60 in 5.6 seconds looks reasonable when compared with the official 0 - 62 in 5.8. What's really impressive is the wide torque band, more reminiscent of a diesel than a petrol - that twin-turbo clearly does its job
I had written off the automatic because Auto Trader says 0-60 was 7 seconds. I'm now doubting that because Parkers.co.uk says 5.5 seconds. Can you confirm Auto Trader is wrong and Parkers is right?
Generally speaking the modern ZF8 auto boxes are quicker to 62 than manual. I’ve got this box in my 440i and it is excellent. Also more economical than the manual. Some say it detracts from the driving experience but I’m very happy. Have a look in that link I sent, the auto figures are in brackets, that will give you the official BMW figures to compare manual/auto.
I'm guessing Wynne, that in your profession you've grown used to the idea that you need to spoon feed some people. Me, I don't have the patience.
We all learn/acquire information and routines at different rates. Happy to help someone who is new to research in such things.
Attention: pedant alert - from an ex-teacher / Mech Eng University Lecturer. I agree that UK units are a mess - litres for liquids, but feet for lengths. The USA is officially a 'Metric Country' - when the Mars Perseverence thing was landing, the live NASA commentary gave the countdown in kph and metres above the Mars surface. Outside academic circles though, just like here, the man (and woman) in the street still use feet inches and yards - but bear in mind their gallons and pints are different from the UK Imperial versions. There are only 2 countries worldwide still holding on to the old measurement units - Myanmar and Liberia. And also - no-one under the age of 50 was ever officially taught in Imperial units - but we still talk of mpg rather the more logical l/100km. In 1969 UK government announced/promised/threatened that road signs and speed limits would change in 1973 and that the UK would be fully metric by 1975. The changed their mind in 1970. I remember one MP saying that it "Wouldn't be fair on old people who couldn't cope with the conversions." and "We should wait for the next generation before we change." I think there is a flaw in that logic. Personally of course I'm happy with SI units, having done all my teaching since 1970 in metric, and the first thing I do in any BMW - even a loaner - is change the settings to metric.
Aye - them smokey old diesels have fairly come on a long way over the years. Remember how we used to think that an E30 M3 was fast with 0 to 62mph in a fantastic 6.7 seconds ! Or an E46 M3 with 5.2 seconds 0 to 62mph. That's enough figures for now.
