    It s now been approximately six months since I took ownership this car and I ve been meaning to do this report for a while now, so here goes.

    Initially , after buying the car I did nt have much opportunity to really delve into what the car was like , I was simply glad to be able to drive it and drive it I did . It is an absolute pleasure to drive although I m not too keen on the drone of the Runflats at times . I m not going to compare it to my previous E46 as that would be an unfair comparison , although there are certain aspects of the E46 that I did prefer and miss , the exhaust note for one. I loved the booming sound of the E46 when I started it up in the garage , the F33 has a very different sound altogether , it s nice, but different , and to be honest I preferred the booming sound of the E46 exhaust , especially with the top down .

    Handling is another aspect that I have nt got round to fully testing as yet. With the F33 being a bigger car I don t find it as “chuckable “ as the E46 , but as I had the E46 for 10 years, driving it felt like putting on a pair of old favourite trainers and feeling so very comfortable with how they fitted . I m getting used to the F33 though and it has nt wavered so far when I ve pushed it a bit

    Performance is far far superior to the E46 , 306 BHP is more than adequate for my needs and you reach licence losing speeds very quickly indeed with three figures appearing very rapidly , I m going to have to watch myself I think , it s just so tempting to floor it , especially in Sport Mode .:) I fear at 66 years old, I m in danger of becoming an old fart boy racer :rolleyes: About town I just use Eco-Pro as you just don t need the power for town driving , the wife just uses Comfort Mode ( she does nt need to know about Sport etc ) :sneaky: and I have nt used Sport + at all , in fact I don t really see the point of it as why drive without all the driving aids when they are all available to you and the F33 is hardly a track day car , more like a fast comfortable cruiser ,with plenty of power when you want it , plus you get full power when in Sport Mode anyway.

    The car had 19500 miles on it when first purchased last December , it, s now just coming up to 22000. It had it s first service under my ownership last week , this was a time based service so I put it to Harry Fairbairn in Inverness ,simply to keep the warranty , and spent the day with an old friend and work colleague .This service was the full bifta and included getting everything done, and Harry Fairbairn relieved me of £596 for the privilege of using them ,and the car needed nothing apart from service items . I may give where I put it for it s next service some thought in two years time , although this will be the smaller service at circa £300 The car however , did get a clean bill of health which I fully expected it to do.

    On the 50 mile run to Inverness it returned 34 mpg and this was nt hanging around , this drops to around 25 mpg in town , which is fine by me as we don t do a lot of miles . The manual 6 Speed Box is good, ( I would have went for an Auto but the wife prefers manual , so manual it had to be ) and the gear change is nice and smooth , very similar to the E46 so the wife is well within in her comfort zone with it .

    The car itself is a very nice , comfortable place to be in , the Heated seats are very comfortable and the wife loves the warm air from the Air Collar when the top is down . I don t mind the Stop/Start feature , the wife hates it . The Sat Nav is brilliant although I very rarely need to use it . I really like the metal folding roof although it does restrict boot space when down but I knew that when I bought it .I love the HUD , as does the wife , one of the best features to have IMO.

    We both love the overall look of the car and we ve had lots of comments about it from complete strangers . BMW seem to have got the aesthetics just right with the F33 , but then again , beauty is in the eye of the beholder , and there does nt seem to be many 4 Series Convertibles around , I ve not seen another one at all either locally or out and about , so it s nice to have something a wee bit different to the norm .

    So, all in all, very happy with this car so far , it has everything I need , and more . I m sure there are features on it I ll never probably use, or even know about . The only thing that has gone wrong so far is a warning on the dash saying the wife s key needed a new battery which is basically nothing

    Would you believe I have nt yet sat down and read the Handbook properly yet :rolleyes:.

    Would I buy this car again , yes , I think I would , perhaps a 340i or 440i Convertible next time .

    Glad to hear you are getting along it with well.

    I understand the concern about the size with most modern cars outgrowing their predecessors by some margin - I think the current 3/4 series is about the same size as an E39 5 series.

    I like the M235i convertible because of the size but the lack of a hard top for year round use is a disadvantage.

    Anyway it's been a great year so far for us vert owners :cloud9:

    Me too, , if BMW did a 2 Series with the metal folding roof it would have been on the shopping list for sure .

    What’s a manual
    Before you guys get all bmw anal, my wife and I have no idea about the heating controls..!!
    There’s 1 knob each to change the set heating per person. 1 small rotary screw knob to blow warm or cold independently of the others and some buttons to turn air con off and on etc....
    Isn’t that it...
    Only understood the regen on the battery after reading peters explanation while we were on the beach in Wales
    You guys really are a whole new world of knowledge and info....
    I think peter was on the research and development panel..

    Great write up Murray. Mine sailed it’s MOT today so legal for another 12mths. I love the folding roof personally. Lifting on and off the winter hard roof on a previous convertible was a chore. Sport + is lively. It only switches off the traction control I think. But then again I never read the manual either . Mine just covered 28k and is certainly getting usage in the current weather ☀️.

    BMW f33 Ownership Diary PT 2.


    Well, it s been well over a year since I ve updated this Ownership Report so here goes .

    The car now has 26.482 miles on it as from today, and I have no complaints about it at all , it does everything asked of it and more , the wife still loves it , and I still look back after parking it , so that tells you everything you need to know :).

    It sailed through it s first MOT in my ownership last December with no Advisories so I was happy with that . Both Remote Batteries needed changing practically at the same time but one can hardly call that a glitch .I finally got round to actually reading the Hand Book to a reasonable depth a few weeks ago and discovered I had Auto Dip and Auto Wipers .:whistling: My youngest grandson discovered that the front seat bolsters are adjustable and took great delight in playing with them . I had assumed the seats were the same as the E46 switchgear layout and never bothered using any others , did nt really need to , this was before I finally read the Hand Book . :whistling:

    I like the way the rear of the boot lifts at the touch of a button inside the boot lid when the Hard Top is down , I discovered That myself , :sneaky: although I ve never had to use it apart from trying it out . I m still undecided whether to ditch the Run Flats when the time comes to replace the tyres , but I m a long way away from having to make that decision yet , loads of tread on them all .

    I decided that given the mileage we do every year it just was nt worth taking out a Warranty or getting a set of Winter Wheels and Tyres although that does nt mean to say I won t buy a set if a good deal on a set comes up .The wife has stopped working due to health reasons so she does nt need the car every other day for her two mile commute. We don t actually depend on the car so if the roads are really bad it can just stay in the garage till they are clear again .

    I put the car into my local Indy for it s Brake Fluid Change , it just was nt worth driving the 120 mile round trip to Harry Fairbairn s in Inverness for a small job like that ,and it only cost me £80 all in and I may just let them do all the servicing in future , have used them for years and known the owner since school .The car is washed with Autosmart Duet Wash and Wax weekly , I still have nt given it a full Machine Polish/ Detail as it does nt really need it as yet although I have given it a De Contaminate , Clay , Polish and Wax by hand this year . Perhaps I ll give it a Machine Polish and Seal before Winter .The wife has kerbed one of the front alloys ( was only a matter of time I suppose ):rolleyes: , but it s not too bad so I ll wait and see if she kerbs the other front before I get them refurbed .:hurl:

    Unlike my last E46 Convertible the Wind Diffuser actually works in the F33 and there s a very noticeable difference with it on . I also like how it stows away behind the back seat and does nt take up any space when not on .

    I ve only done one Mod to the car and that was to fit Bimec 12mm Spacers on the Rear and 10mm Spacers on the Front with the appropriate longer bolts so the arches are filled out nicely with no tyre rubbing at all , and the stance looks better . Gaps between the bodywork and wheels are one of my pet hates , I think it goes back to my teenage years when most cars had skinny wheels and tyres with excessive overhanging bodywork and looked a bit ridiculous to my eyes . Whilst I had the wheels off I gave them a good clean , polish , and seal . I have no more Mods planned although my grandsons are urging me to get it remapped , but at 67 , I m a bit old for that now, ……………………or am I? :muhaha::muhaha:

    Some of you may remember that when I went down Williams BMW Liverpool I ended up in intensive care in Ninewells Hospital Dundee on the way home with Double Pneumonia and was nearly a goner due to a severe exacerbation of my COPD , this was my 5th and worst bout of Pneumonia . It s been a long hard struggle this past 2 years but surprisingly I ve improved massively , I m at a better stage fitness wise than Ive been for the past 5 years . After attending a Pulmonary Rehab Course at my local Hospital in Buckie I ve just kept on improving . I have nt had or needed a Steroid or Antibiotic for well over a year now , and that is after being on them more than off them over a period of 3 years , I walk a couple of miles daily , a far cry from having to stop at the end of the garden gasping for breath before being able to come back to the house . I ve lost over a stone , (Steroids bloat you up ) I go to a Keep fit Class once a week , I do my weights exercises twice daily and fully intend handing back my Blue Badge in a few months all being well . It s been quite a transformation , but as a certain member on here says ,
    Never Underestimate the Power of Thrawn ," :sneaky:

    As for the 435i Convertible , it s a Keeper ……….for now , still miss my E46 at times though :)

    Great write up Murray, especially the last paragraph. Quite an achievement to be in a position where you can hand back your Blue Badge, never heard of anyone being able to do that. Well done, hope your health keeps on improving!...(y)
