On collecting my G30 from the dealer today after its safety recall and MoT It was mentioned by the service advisor that BMW recommended the bonnet struts were replaced every 2nd brake fluid change as they are part of the pedestrian protection system. I was a bit dubious and had a look on line - offers have also been offered this "recommendation! The dealership quoted £132 but there was no pressure to actually have it done just a "recommendation" Anybody else had this and / or had the struts replaced ?
Pretty sure they usually have a date printed on them, sure they used to and it was part of the vehicle check to check it.
Ive had a look at them, no date obvious Suggestions on line are that any date is for stock control not a replace by date The dealership did not seem bothered about changing them just mentioned "so i was aware"
Wonder if they are pre-tensioned? Pull back on impact to withdraw the bonnet from the pedestrian. Just guessing! Interesting concept though, and nice of them to remind you.
They spring up at the hinges which effectively lifts the bonnet further from the engine to try and stop a pedestrian hitting the solid engine.
Apparently the check is part of the brake fluid service check, struts are lifed for a 5 year expiry and if that period is exceeded before next due brake fluid check it is recommended that they are changed. These are the main struts which assist as part of the pedestrian collision system as detailed by markyboyt
The_Master is correct, it is in the brake fluid not vehicle check as I said. Attached is the part of the instruction for the bonnet struts.
Thanks for the information Now has anybody actually bothered having them replaced ? No mention of it on the Health checck and the I drive shows all green OK It is 5 years old next week and has a full BMW service history including annual oil and filter changes (by providing my own oil and getting 10% of parts the costs are in line with what local indys quote)
They actually lift the trailing edge of the bonnet to stop pedestrians hitting the windscreen wiper posts.
