Will shortly be getting rid of the trusty 7 but want to fix an intermittent problem that occasionally throws up a park position fault when engaging park. I've eliminated the gear selector stalk having substituted in a couple of known serviceable items so my thoughts are now turning towards the seals in the mechatronics unit. I've heard this mentioned elsewhere but not exactly sure of the parts involved.

Has anyone else experienced this before?

    Anyone?

I'm having trouble locating an independent transmission specialist near me (or happy to travel for the right place) just north of Doncaster.

This afternoon I'm off to Barnsley as a pure stab in the dark Google search of transmission specialists. They'll run a diagnostics check to try and locate the issue.

I took the car to the place in Barnsley for diagnostics and it came up with code 00507B - "EGS (Electronic Transmission Control) parking gear sensors implausible." He said that this couldn't be the usual suspect seals within the mechatronics unit as it was an electronic fault, not a hydraulic pressure one. However, I found a place in Sheffield that has done many of these so that's my next stop, could be about £700 to do the work.

At least it’s a pointer in the right direction. Hopefully a fix at the end of it, albeit an expensive one. Good luck.

Ok, an update on the mechatronics issue and the park position fault.

My car has been with the gearbox repairer for a couple of weeks, they fitted a mechatronics seal kit but unfortunately the fault is still there. They priced a new mechatronics unit up at about £1,500 plus VAT and the total bill would have been just over £2,050 with the work done already. It pains me to say it but I've told them not to proceed, it's just not worth it given that it's my intention to sell the car straight away and it's only worth about £2,500 anyway. It would have been a different issue had I been keeping it.

So I'll just advertise it with the fault there and see what happens.

Not the best of outcomes, bit of a buggar I’d imagine.
But given the value (financially) of the car, probably the best decision.

Just to add a bit more info on this, when I got the car back from the gearbox specialist, unrepaired but with a new Mechatronics seal kit fitted, it drove absolutely terribly on the way home. The gearbox was doing all kinds of weird things and on 3 occasions on the motorway it decided to shift down and lock itself in 3rd gear! A quick stop and a reboot solved the problem, but only for 10 minutes or so. I didn't panic as I thought it was perhaps bedding itself in and 'learning'. I eventually got it home and it then decided to decant half a litre or so of unknown fluid on the drive; I immediately took it to a local garage and they said that the transmission sump bolts were loose!!

I know that I should've phoned the gearbox specialist up and advised them of the issues and taken it back, but it was the middle of Winter with deep and lingering snow around Sheffield where they're located, so I didn't bother. The car's just been away again for a few months with my indy BMW guy (long story, moving premises, mega busy, car not needed etc) having new brake pipes to get it through an MOT, so when I collected it the other day I hadn't driven it for a long time. The gearbox didn't lock up this time on the drive home but it's not a happy box for sure! It's actually much worse than when I originally took it in for what was a simple Park position fault and nothing more!

I do still intend to sell it ASAP when I've had a car park scrape on the front bumper (not my fault) repaired, I'm sure someone out there with lots of gearbox knowledge and possibly the right Mechatronics unit will take it off my hands. Aside from the gearbox it's an absolutely solid car with not a single spot of rust anywhere and everything just works, for a 19 year old car that ain't bad.
