well with the new 5GT delivery date getting closer i thought i would start looking at what it was going to cost to fit some winter tyres, the rears are 275/40/19 and i can only find a couple of tyres in this size and they are £400.00 a tyre for BMW star rated run-flats, i had also found a lovey set of alloys for a great price but no way am i paying £400.00 a tyre, non run-flats come for a little over half that money which i could live with but i am not sure if i want to go down that route I will have to wait until i get the car and see what the tyre label on the door pillar suggests as the size for winters and get a set of alloys to suit
Better off buying my 20's with Michelin non runflats and keeping your 19's for winters;) But seriously you would be better off with 18's for winters.
More than likely to be 245/50 18s all round on 8x18 wheels. Style 234, 250, or 254 are all F07 fitments.
I have seen them on the bay and in the classified here and they would be nice but i am well overspent already and another £1200 for wheels and tyres could lead to a very expensive divorce now if they had winter rubber on them i might have been able to convince her I think you might be right re the 18 inch square set up for the winter months may be the way to go and i could probably do that for a grand with secondhand alloys and new rubber, I will have to get my E60 style 243 rims with Dunlop wintersport 4D up for sale to see if i can free up space and a few pounds toward the new winters
of the three sets i quite like the look of the style 254, I will have to keep an eye out in the next few weeks
Your 243's are the correct offsets for the GT, not sure if they would fit over the brake disc's though? I also have a set of 18" style 234, but one has a slight crack, you can have them for peanuts. They are also one eBay if you search, take no notice of the price, likewise for the 303M's.
18s, 243s, 20s, it's all abracadabra to me... But are winter tyres really worth the hassle and expense? Does that maybe depend on where you live and drive?
All is revealed here: http://felgenkatalog.auto-treff.com/ Wheel specifications and styles - plus the approved tyre sizes for all BMW models. I've treated Winter tyres as a fact of life for more years than I care to remember so don't see them as any hassle at all. You're right about where one lives and drives. There is usually plenty snow / low temperatures where I live but as well as that my lifestyle - both family and other commitments - mean I need to have the ability to set off on a trans-European journey at the drop of a hat. There are several countries that require me to have Winter tyres according to the calendar and not the weather to be encountered en route. For example Austria requires Winter tyres from 1st November until April 15th - the famous 'Okt to Ost' as they say in Austria (Oktober tot Pasen in het Nederlands)
Winters would be useless to me for two reasons: 1. I live within the M25 and don't really get a winter season anymore 2. I don't use the car for work and my missus is self employed and can stay home if the weather is bad. Simply not worth the expense for me, but I fully understand why people do choose winters.
Mach one, also bear in mind that E65 7 series wheels should fit, that's exactly what mine are. You may find a better deal on them.
I have also run winter tyres since buying my E60 and I love them, I live in a rural area and we don't get massive e amounts of snow but do get lots of frosty mornings and more than our fair share of rain and I just like knowing the rubber on the road is right for the conditions, in the boot of my 5er I had snow chains and a snow shovel but I had no intention of using them but you never know when you may get caught out My car is a weekend days off and holidays car don't use it for work and the missus does not drive it so if snow on the ground most of the time the car can stay parked up As for numbers the winters I have for the E60.Are 225/50/17 with an offset of 20 it think the F07 18.inch square are a 30.offset is that correct ? Even if the 17s did fit over the calipers they look lost on the 5gt I am down in London for the weekend I brought my daughter and her friend down for summer in the city I will have a look at your add for the 18,s on e bay when I get home on Monday
I'm sure you know but the correct offset is dependent on the rim width. I am running 21" 9J front with ET24 and 10J rears ET 40, 7.5J on 17's would be fine at ET20, but it's academic as BMW don't list 17" wheels for the GT, so we should assume they won't fit.
All this talk about big numbers makes my 17,s look like mini wheels weighing in at a mere 7.5j x17 but I knew they wouldn't fit so it has to be 18,s for my winters, I know they won't win any style points but they will do the job and stay within budget 're cost of tyres
well i have ordered a set of secondhand alloys with winter tyres for the 5GT they are BMW light alloy double spoke style 238 wheels fitted with Dunlop winter sport 3D tyres, they are 8,5Jx19 EH2 ET25 wheels with Dunlop winter sport 3D 245/45/R19 102V M&S tyres with 6.0mm of tread on two and 6.5mm of tread on two so lots of life still left on the tyres, the wheels also have TPMS valves already fitted so we are good to go that is what they will look like on the 5GT the dealer that i bought my car from had a set of the same wheels finished in black and they are on sale at a very good price for a new set fitted with pirelli tyres, but i am not a fan of black alloys and i was not sure they look right on the imperial blue car as i have gone for 19 inch rims the snow chains that i have will not fit them so i will keep an eye open for a new set of chains to throw in the boot as part of my winter motoring kit
looks like we have different taste in wheels, when i was looking for winter wheels i really liked the look ot he the style 250, 254, and top of the list would have been style 235 multi spoke, i love the style of the 20,s that snrbrtsn has on his 5GT so i prefer a wheel with lots of spokes when i saw the style 238 wheels off the car they were my least favorite of the bunch but using the BMW wheel configurator to put them on my car they started to grow on me and i still like my 302,s, lots of spokes
Should of got these bad boys http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-B...36112289866-/182162403883?hash=item2a69b9b22b Wonder if they do 18" c/w wheel trims
now they would really complete the look, how about 21 inch steelies with hub caps held on with zip ties
