Hi, I'm going to be changing my 5 series touring for most likely a 2016 X1 20d. Most of them do not come with a rear camera and it is one of the things I promised myself for my next car. Is it a case of plug to retro fit one? I'd probably go with a genuine BMW one if I can to avoid issues but would be interested if anyone has tried the aftermarket ones that fit exactly as the OEM does. Many thanks, Matt.
Erm! I could be wrong though I believe it would involve running wires to unit in dash then coding Probably best to narrow search for cars with factory fitment
there are companies that will do a full install for £400.00-£500.00 parts alone from BMW would probably be around that figure www.advanced-incar.co.uk/products/reversing-cameras/bmw-reversing-camera-retrofit the reversing camera fitted to my car is around £375.00 for just the camera so £475.00 fitted in the link on above is not that bad l know it is not oem but looks like a tidy install l have just re read the page that l linked to and that price is supply only and fitting is at an extra cost sorry l thought it looked to good to be true
That looks really good quality Mach certainly worth the upgrade at that price, as it looks indistinguishable from factory. Only thing I can tell is that the lines & squares look slightly different, but still work the same. Luckily for me, the previous owner had ticked that box on the original order. It wasn't one of the options that was a 'must have' but it is nice to have in addition to the standard all-round sensors. (Btw, the way the corresponding speaker nearest the obstruction emits the beep is fantastic too). (Sorry for the poor quality photo, it is dark, my phone is rubbish and it's -2c )
just read the small print on that page that l linked to and the price given is supply only fitting is at extra cost
they are dash cams the impression that l got was the OP wanted a reverse assist camera because they were talking about factory fit and as far as l am aware BMW never did factory fit dash cams
Have you had a look at https://www.bimmer-tech.net/, they do retrofit kits, the majority are plug and play, if you enter your vin number, they can tell you what will fit your car.
I can highly recommend 'advanced in car' I have had the reversing camera fitted in my last two cars they are a very friendly bunch of people and completed a very tidy install in a quick and efficient manner I don't know where you live but if you can get to their main office/workshop in Bournemouth they have a customer lounge with tea/coffee on tap and free wifi so you can do some work if you have to whilst they attend to your car
Thanks for all the replies. It's a shame BMW don't spec this as standard, it's hardly anything flash and it must be an age thing but this is a must have for me. There's some good options here, thanks. That said, I think I will just insist to one with it already fitted. I'm lucky that my existing car is fine and that I can buy the new one before selling the old one and so I just have to wait for the right car to pop up. Thanks again - much appreciated.
I think I'd really miss the reversing camera, if I had to do without it. So useful on the Touring, that extra 'eye' is an excellent option. Peter
They have good reports and also there is the following: https://www.in-car-install.co.uk/?post_type=product&s=X1+F48 In my view if you have set your heart on an X1 F48, I would look for the right car first and then fit an aftermarket camera, rather than compromise and purchase it because of no camera.
