Need new tyres on the front and looking in Costco. Currently got Goodyear eagle f1’s on the rear and Goodyear excellence on the front. Costco doing £50 off 2 Michelins so wondering wether to pay the extra and get the Goodyears so all match or go with the Michelins to save £50. Thinking the £50 saving can pay for the wheel alignment check as the front offside tyre has worn on the outer edge, doesn’t pull over at all but not sure of any other reason it would wear like that on the front. what’s your thoughts on this?
Also is it best to get the alignment checked before or after new tyres?

No harm in having Michelins up front and GYs on the rear. When the rears wear you can then swap to Michelins, hoping there is a discount offer on.
I’d be getting alignment done after new tyres have been fitted.

The original set lasted 40k miles so i replaced them with a new set.
More to consider than just price

Ignoring which is the better tyre, you’ve raised the question of mixing brands and type. Fitting the same tyre (brand and type) to all four corners has to be the safest bet; anything else is in the lap of the gods – I doubt you’ll find a tyre or vehicle manufacturer who’ll argue with that.

It could however, be perfectly fine to mix tyres. Just bear in mind you won’t know ‘till it really matters, and then it could be too late.

    I assume you don't have X Drive?

If not mix should be fine as long as same tyres on the each axle (but not guarantees that handling balance won't be affected) -

X Drive is a whole new ball game of star marked tyres, ensure there are minimal differences between axles and across each, I would definitely then stick to the same on all four corners and preferably star marked.

Michelins have a good reputation and normally wear extremely well and are consistent throughout their life.

Alignment is best done after tyre fitting.

No haven’t got the X Drive and I’d never of mixed different tyres on same axle, just things bit tight lately so looking for a decent cheaper option without too much compromise.
I’ll have Goodyears on the rear and Michelin on the front.
Looking again tonight it’s £90 saving over the Goodyears and I’d of never considered mixing if it was a cheap brand.

I totally totally totally 100% agree with the above…
But as a comparison to the other end of the spectrum…if you took a sample of the cars in and around the local pub close to where I live…. Or indeed the local garage where I take my ‘other’ car for running repairs …. I doubt you’d find any 4 tyres of the same make on the same vehicle..….. let alone of similar tread depth.. and they’re not picking them out of the side ditches on a weekly basis….
Yes it’s definitely safer to have all the same. That cannot be argued against… and it’s definitely safer to have a good reputable brand…but there are other very real dangers on the road to consider well beyond the tyres on your own car…. Like all the nutters who are on the road, in their cars from the pub where I go… ..!!!! For eg. With their collection of daily run abouts…
MOT tests…. Hmmm really…?? carried out with a guy wearing dark glasses and a very dim torch..
    Good luck….
Also Definitely Gonna be better than 1.6mm of tread at 70mph on a water filled motorway for sure…

Thanks for all the advice and decided to go for the Michelins, the saving of £90 although not a huge amount; is at this moment in time with everything else I’m paying out and they really couldn’t wait any longer.

Nightmare night. Mrs had phone call to say her nephew who’s only 34 has had a cardiac arrest, she’s panicking wanting to go the hospital and on the way it turns out the tyre I knew was worn on the outer edge was more worn out on the inner edge than I realised as it’s just give way. Managed to get the car home but now can’t use it and new tyres ordered from Costco.
Got to now try and sort out getting the wheels off the car so I can take the wheels to Costco for the new tyres.
Unless anyone is around Liverpool who has a spare wheel I could borrow just to get me to Costco next week as I don’t know how I’ll get the wheels off and keep the car up with the 2 fronts off as I’ve no axle stands etc.

Daft but could you just take the one and get a tyre fitted then take the car for the other 3.
Is your Costco far from you.
Not even sure if they would let you do that as never had dealings with them none round my way.

I was thinking about if they’d let me do that. I’ve paid for them both and would only be taking one wheel so it’s not likely I’d leave the other I suppose. Hopefully they call me Tuesday to say tyres are in.

All done now. Got the car on axle stands this morning and took the wheels to get the new tyres on. All sorted. Feel better now it’s got nice new tyres on.

    Brilliant news - lucky chap.

I volunteer with East of England Ambulance and attend multiple cardiac arrests every year. That early intervention is critical to survival rates - he was certainly in the right place at the right time.
