My intention is to buy the e46 330d 204hp manual. I'm wondering if its going to be a scary experience or I'll get good service that matches the good looks.
I'd also like to know things I need to do or parts I need to check to ensure it gives me service without issues for as long as possible.

    Welcome aboard, Mark :wavey:

I've never had an e46 but @Verbarthe may be you man - although his was a petrol model I'm sure he'll be able to give you pointers about the rest of the potential pitfalls on the range.

I had a 320d for about 8 years and car was super reliable, economical and great to drive...

Most of teh issues are well known, parts will be relatively easy to find and reasonable price, shoudl be plenty of secondhand spares too, cars are quite old now and may have passed through the hands of bodgers and people who just don't bother with maintenance .....if you can find a good one go for it.

How bizarre, I typed about the 2004 330d touring that my wife used to own and the text evaporated!

I owned an e46 330d sport for 5 years it was an auto tho and I never really had any problems. The only niggles I did have we’re front arms and bushes as they kept failing due to the torque. But I did have it remapped.
As for those everything else was fine.
