    As per the title..

Having just sold the Westfalia camper, it just dawned on us that we need a second car. We set ourselves a £15k budget, well I did, my better half thought we’d be more sensible at £10k, but I wanted to buy AUC for peace of mind. In terms of vehicle, we initially thought F20 118d. We enquired on a couple but found a lot were very basic spec and the ones with big specs were quickly sold. This then turned out to be a consistent theme. It seems that there is a huge amount of pent up demand and the world and his wife is out there buying cars. It’s very much a sellers market.

This weekend I have had conversations on 6 different cars. In all cases we were pipped to the post by others; sometimes by just an hour. Yesterday afternoon I was about to buy an F10 530d and was minutes from putting down the deposit when my girlfriend saw an X1 and her face lit up. That pointed the search in a new direction. This morning we thought we’d secured the unicorn of of all F48’s - virtually every option box ticked. We lost out by minutes. :( The only “problem” with that car was the colour scheme which was black interior on white. My other half is more keen on dark coach work and light interior (this is why we’re perfect together since that’s also my favourite). :)

We ended up doing a very speedy deal on a 2016 X1 20i XLine in grey with oyster leather interior and a good amount of toys. We’d decided we wanted a minimum of auto, xdrive, sports seats, nav, heated leather seats, folding ext. mirrors, LED headlights, front & rear parking sensors. We got all of that plus a few extra bits and a 2yr AUC warranty.

We’re collecting a week on Saturday once the car is prepped. Although not my first choice of car, (and neither of us have even so much as set foot in one let alone driven one!), I do think that it’s a great accompanying car to the Macan and given the massive smile which came across my girlfriends face; it’s the perfect car for her and I’m delighted she’s so happy. We’ll be tinting the rear windows when we get it and fitting a detachable towbar. Otherwise it’s spot on!

I’ll post some pics when I have them.

Congrats on securing one, sounds as though it’s a minefield out there at the moment. Zero sales to non-stop in a few weeks.
Hope you both like this one. Only other time I’ve bought blind was when I bought the F30, hadn’t even driven one but the deal was too good to turn down. Had a test drive when it had arrived at Sytners and had been prepped.

A happy other half is always a winner.

Congratulations on the purchase.(y)(y) I look forward to the pictures and also your driving experience after you have had it a while. We have dropped down to a one-car family and are still waiting for a build date for our order of an F48 2020 LCI X1 xdrive 20i M Sport. We are advised it could be with us in September.

Nice one Dunk, I do like the F48 a lot, just finding a decent spec was the problem when I was looking. Glad you found all the toys you wanted.

My only question is how you get a 'Featured' thread with no photos?

Sounds like it's a well-specced car, does it have a towbar? I bought my current F30 without having test-driven one before, on the drive home was when I decided it needed a suspension upgrade.

It's a well packaged car the X1. Unusually for a BM it looks better in X-Line or Sport trim than the M Sport. Be interested to hear how you get on with it.

Thanks all. I have to say, I agree with the XLine vs M Sport. We looked at several of the latter but kept coming back to the XLine. Helped also due to the fact that M Sport carries a premium for no other reason than the body kit.

Although I have a sneaky suspicion I’d have been happier with the F10, it really was important to me for my girlfriend to be happy with this and she genuinely is. I do think it’s going to be a good car for her to knock around in, whilst being practical enough that it won’t matter whether it’s the Porsche or X1 which gets driven for a school pickup / airport run to pick up friends and family etc. Thereby reducing discussions around logistics of who takes what, when.

I admit, I’m not happy it’s the Mini platform with the FWD biased xdrive, but that’s the price of progress. I’m just happy I got my 20d rather than 118d.

I’ll pop the full spec list up, but in terms of options:

    - ambient interior lighting
    - electric folding & dimming exterior mirrors
    - Comfort Access
    - Sports Seats
    - Park Assist (inc. front & rear sensors)
    - Extended storage

That’s on top of a fairly generous standard spec with Bluetooth steaming, satnav (only the business style rather than Pro), heated seats, adaptive LED headlights, cruise control and powered bootlid.

Its probably a bit OTT for the second car, but equally less so than knocking around in a £60k T6 camper!

Horses for courses I suppose. Each to his own and naturally very subjective. On the 2020 LCI version, we felt the M Sport was the better looking.

In fairness, I haven’t really looked at the LCI version so can’t comment. I also think they’re very colour sensitive. We would’ve bought a mineral white XLine (for the spec), but got gazumped. But that didn’t look nearly as good as other XLines with darker bodywork.

I see yours is Atlantic Grey. Why oh why do they keep changing the greys? Ours will be Mineral grey metallic.

    @Spuffington
By way of comparison, attached is the 2020 LCI 1.8i M Sport ( 3 cylinders 1.5-litre petrol) demo we drove when the lockdown ended.

As can be seen, BMW are trying to make the front of the X1, X3, x5 and X7 look similar. If you see an LCI X1 or an X3 coming towards you when driving, it is quite easy to get confused. When on foot, you have look at the rear to be certain.

I know - so many colours I haven’t come across before.

Mineral Grey is a lovely colour (I had it on my previous F20 118d) and I think it’ll pop far more than Atlantic Grey (which I haven’t seen in the flesh). Almost think the latter is a non-metallic. Still, with the brushed chrome accents and light interior, it should look pretty classy once I’ve machine polished, glazed and waxed it.

Quick update, I will no longer be purchasing this car. I had to pull out today.

I had insisted upon a 2nd year Mondial warranty, which I’ve had on all my recent BMW AUC purchases. A second year warranty was added, but when I got the invoice, it came back with Marshall’s own plan, which is underwritten by Car Care Plan and is effectively a third party warranty. Marshall’s are insistent the 2nd year AUC can’t be added. I spoke with Barrett’s about another x1 25d shortly afterwards and they say it can be done. Not easily, but can be.

Anyway, I’ve invoked my distance selling rights, pulled out of the deal and asked for my deposit money back.

I’m disappointed but it’s a point of principle. I’m more annoyed however that the finance was confirmed already so I have a search against my credit record yet no vehicle to show for it.

Heyho. There’ll be another car out there, but it certainly looks like the very well specced ones are snapped up in hours........
