    Anyone know about these?

Been offered this one and would welcome any advice on common issues and what to look for.

As you can see, my son loves it![IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

Absolutely great fun and you will love it but they are bags of shit money pits. Everything goes wrong with them and all the time.
Took me years to kick the green oval addiction but best thing I ever did. At first I didn’t know what to do at weekends with no car needing fixed but I found I had a wife and kids and we can eat now and we have cash in our pockets.

It will break down often...and when it's not broken down someone will nick it.

Noisy, cramped, uncomfortable, unreliable, and its had 26 years of hard life already

Christ you’re brave, an absolute labour of love and hate. You’ll not be able to buy that bad boy without reasonably deep and constant pockets. Steer away from the bling, that looks like it’s done some time off road so take someone along with a forensic knowledge of LRs.

I had a brand new one in 2000 and kept it until 2009 and did 153,000 miles in it.

After six days the slave cylinder went so struggled selecting gears. Then I had water leaking through the air flap under the windscreen etc etc...

I genuinely loved mine. One service cost £3,500 to sort out as the lights stopped working and when you tried to turn them on the alarm went off instead.

I had the rear cross member replaced twice on mine and genuinely replaced the tyres once as a complete set as they were getting low on tread but I had a puncture so bit the bullet and got rid of them all. Mine was a Td5 which was ok. Warped exhaust manifold caused a hissing noise and I swapped my coil suspension for air suspension which was great fun.

Final nail in the coffin for me was almost being able to put my finger through the chassis where it had rotted and it would be circa £3,500 for a new one with a friend doing it for me so I decided to get rid.

Cramped, noisy, poor build quality, but it was good fun. I did too many miles too quickly for mine which was why it didn’t last. It was meant to do double that mileage over its lifetime but I killed mine really. If I still had it it would be on around 300,000 miles by now.

Consider that maintenance wise, my Supercharged Range Rover is cheaper to run and maintain including fuel and using a main dealer for service and maintenance

Buy it, but start saving now !

Walk away.... ignore the Sirens song in your head.

If you really want to throw money down a drain, I'll PM you details of a bank account to send it to instead. :D

I have an (ex-LandRover owner) friend who once said.

"If you want to know what it's like to own a LandRover - just stand under a cold shower while tearing up £50 notes, crumple into a ball and throw them at the toilet bowl. Any that miss you get a 2nd chance at tearing them up."

    Also a 1993 wouldn’t be a Td5. Would be a 300 Tdi I think

A Land Rover owner "offering" it you you......wonder if he has tried to flog it elsewhere to fellow enthusiasts and had no success ?

Run away, as far as you can, when you stop for breath look over your shoulder and tell yourself you haven't run far enough or fast enough so run some more.

And when you've run away as far as you can have a rest and run even further

I actually asked, liked the look of it but know nothing about these beasts.

Tbh I liked the raised stance, grey paint and blacked out windows. Def something different.

But yes, I take your points, even though they were so subtle

    That’s a real boys toy
Aside from the few faults listed...... the joy that shall bring, more than counterbalances any argument

It does take me back to my youth when time was spent Pdi’ ing them off the transporter.
Ha, if only I could write the memoirs on a single page ( corrosion, wiring looms, oil leaks, tractor joints, endless thoughts & frustration)
Troublesome purchase for sure but a timeless classic that I’d gladly own, Albeit with my eyes wide open!

We ran a fleet of Defenders on Humanitarian Aid work during the war in Kosovo.

All kinds they were - bought 2nd hand in UK and driven out by our charity volunteers - some never made it the 3000 miles.

Those that arrived we kept going courtesy of the British Army from their apparently unlimited supply of spares in Pristina.

Roads in Kosovo at that time were horrendous - just a series of potholes and wrecked by tanks and other tracked vehicles.

Great guys in the stores - they would give us any part we wanted as long as there was a broken bit to sign in in exchange for it.

Simple broken bits were therefore easy to replace - it was diagnosing the continual electrical faults that was a nightmare.

I used to hate these, then i went on a Land Rover day, and came away realising they are one of the most amazing things I have ever driven.
Since I have always mulled over buying one, even recently after seeing one on 5th Gear.
But, having read the above, prob not. Shame.
I had heard they get nicked a lot which was prob why i resisted.

That one looks good and has clearly been used for what it is capable of doing.

    I agree - LandRover Experience days are great - a real eye-opener.

    I've been on several.
