Going to probably pick a 21 plate M440d on Saturday. Can the ECU be unlocked so they can be mapped? Are the chip tuning boxes any good for these? Does the ECU still need to be unlocked to use of those? Has anyone on here previously owned FJ21KNN ?
Hello and welcome. Have you driven one of these yet? I suspect you won't be needing any upgrades for a while, the torque from these engine is insane, it just pulls and pulls in any gear and speed. If you do want to increase power/torque, these boxes will simply plug and play, I used one on an older 320d and found them to be excellent. https://bluesparkautomotive.com/partfinder/product/result/?fuel_type=Diesel&make=BMW&model=M340D No idea as to the ECU tuning on these, but there do seem to be quite a few companies offering tuning for the 340/440d cars.
Good luck with the new motor. Can’t offer much advice on tuning boxes or the aftermarket stuff, other than to say I’ve watched few videos on M340D that mention having been tuned. Like Wynne says though, have you driven one yet before fancying tuning it? The engine as standard is an absolute peach that really won’t be embarrassed or shown up by very much in day to day driving.
Thanks for the replies so far. Haven't driven one yet but just sold a 67 plate 335d X Drive remapped to 406 bhp.
The mild hybrid on the M340d will add something to the mix, the acceleration is boosted by the hybrid system, makes it feel like there is more than the power figures alone suggest. Will be interested to hear what your initial thoughts are coming from a tuned F31.
Picked the car up and love it. Had a 3 month garage warranty on it and I've needed it unfortunately Adblu tank and module faulted after about 4 weeks and it was replaced at a cost of £1500 approx. Going in tomorrow to have the drivers wing mirror sorted as on occasion it won't open. The car is fantastic though. Delighted with the choice. Bit strange having a bit of hassle on a frosty morning what with the windows needing to drop to get in but some gummipflege on the seals and a car cover have sorted that out. Car was well specced up already so at present only added hi beam assistant via the My BMW app, wheel spacers and changed out the diamond grill for the horizontal slat one. Had it Ceramic coated as well. It was already ppfd on front bumper, bonnet, front wings and rear bumper so a bit of further protection doesnt go amiss. Might go down the route of lowering it at some point but need to look into that as it has adaptive dampers.
Lovely looking car. Are with happy with the power for now? The torque must be a monster. Which front splitter does it have?
Cheers mate. Happy with the power at the moment yeah. It has plenty. Feels very similar to what my remapped 335d felt like power wise. Still doing a bit of research at the moment so when the ECU unlocks are available then I might be tempted ! Bought the car with what was described as the M Exterior Carbon package. Also has the 20inch wheels with run flats now removed, Shadowline Plus Pack, Tech and Comfort Packs to include, HUD, LEDs, yellow DRL modules, HK, adaptive dampers, wireless charging, heated seats and steering etc. Been fortunate to find it and get it bought.
Cracking looking motor! Those wheels look like they suit it very well. That’s also a monster looking spec list. I never really wished for any more spec, other than HUD, on the 4 series I had, and it actually only had a fraction of that lot. Not sure how effective it is on the 40D, but on my 420D the best bit for daily driving was the “Adaptive” button. Worked wonders on the suspension feeling, and arguably made it a better every day drive than my current M340D which I can find a whole lot less info about the suspension on than the dynamic suspension on the 4 series.
Indeed it has excellent spec, all the more of a bonus given that it was made during the height of the chip/wiring shortage issues.
My last car, sold in December last year, was a G22 M440i. The "Adaptive" button was one of my go-to settings for everyday driving, particularly for longer journeys. The car adapted the suspension/gearbox/engine to suit the drivers input, so if I put my foot down and drove with a bit more aggression, the car held itself in a more sporty mode, then when on the motorway at normal speeds, it was all but set to EcoPro. Very clever.
This is what the BMW bumph says: "In the ADAPTIVE setting, the steering, damping and accelerator responses along with the Steptronic transmission’s shift characteristics are automatically adjusted to suit the driving style." Have you found "Sprint" mode yet? Hold the left paddle for one second, it drops the engine into Sport+ and the gearbox into manual, brilliant for overtaking manoeuvres. Then hold the right paddle for a second and all goes back to the mode you were originally in.
