Pass with no advisories and the vehicle health check was three pages of ticks so all good for another year

this was my last year that the car is covered by BMW MOT protect so from now on l will be paying for any repairs and servicing as the service inclusive also expires on the 26th march 2020. it has been nice for past three and a half years having everything covered when the car goes in for service but from now on it will mean open wallet surgery

l have been looking at a couple of petrol 6 GT's but no plans to change for the next 12 months or so. at five years old and just under forty one thousand miles the 5 GT s still a great car and suits my needs at the moment

l know that the financials will be going south at an alarming rate but l will have to live with that

the brakes will be the scary one. l have a set of rear pads and a sensor so could get them fitted for labour only as rear discs look good. but the front brakes show service in 3200 miles and the front discs may need to be replaced

front brake pad & disc service £623.25

Rear brake pad & disc service £513.07

Ouch! I do wince when I see the BMW brake servicing, seems rather steep to me. Very glad my car came with new discs and pads all round when k bought it.
Would certainly be doing my own disc/pad changes if and when they do need changing.

Get the extended warranty, the full cover also covers wear and tear. So anything that would fail an MOT will be covered except brakes pads and discs. My 8 year old X3 cost £615 with no excess. I’ve had two window regulators costing over £700 done at the last service. It has just been in for the recall and they did a full free inspection finding a front brake back plate lose due to corrosion at one of the bolts. Cost was just over £100. All covered by the warranty without question. Given the age of the car it qualifies for the value servicing making it on par with any of my local indies plus my dealer will collect and return leaving me a car FOC.

With regards front discs and pads, I have just replaced my fronts with Textar who are current OEM for £170 delivered from my tyres in Germany. Even if you then pay someone to fit them that is a lot cheaper than BMW Pricing.

l have got the extended warranty on the car. that has been in place since the three year warranty expired a couple of years ago costs just shy of a grand a year on my car but l just see it as an extra motoring expense because l would not be running this car without a comprehensive warranty in place

So how would having a warranty be of benefit to reduce the cost of a brake service? o_O

And the results are in.....passed with flying colours !
They even respected by no wash request...having spent 6 hours yesterday, washing then polishing then waxing it !
    Expensive month
    MoT
    Brake Fluid change
    Oil and Filter change
    Tax
    Insurance
    Extended warranty

Dealership was very quiet, a few service customers but only one couple looking for a car to buy

Out of interest I've just looked up my wifes old Mazda MX5.

08 plate that she bought as new she kept it 5 years and did 59950 miles in it...costing us just one set of tyres and one set of discs and pads in addition to an annual service.

It failed its first MoT with a broken anti roll link.

Since then it has passed every MoT without a single advisory ! And is now coming up 12 years old and over 100k on the clock

It now appears to be a pampered garage queen, having done less than 4k in 3 years. We did see it a couple of years ago, pulled onto a dual carriageway and it was directly in front of us, followed it for several miles

Just got back from picking the car up, it passed the MOT, no advisories :) .. £54.85.

However, the service adviser when phoning me advised that the brake discs at front are quiet worn and that I should change them when i change the brake pads. Upon looking at the video, it says I have 10mm left on all brake discs. So i'm now dubious as to why the brake discs have worn when there is sufficient brake pads?

I did ask them when do you think i should change the brake discs, they said well when your brake pads need changing. I said well, the car says it has approx 40k and 50k to go and considering I only do 5k a year roughly, it will be a long time but no comment.

I re-asked when i visited the dealership to collect and again, no real answer. My concern is will the brake discs wear out before the pads and cause more issue? or should just ignore it as based on the saying doing when the pads wear out, that's going to be approx another 8 years, unless my annual mileage changes.

Also, on this video, my tyres are:-

    7mm - passenger front
    6mm - Drivers front
5mm - on both rear tyres

All tyres in good condition, as well as suspension.

Dealership also has a sign up saying company policy not to do handshakes at this time due to the coronavirus.

    Kev
