I'm glad to have found this forum. It seems a lively yet not rowdy place. Quite a bit of the activity appears to be around the newer cars, whereas I really like the older ones... Well, I actually like new BMWs as well, but what I am currently looking for is an E28 (or possibly an E12).

Why the E28? As I child I always admired it, and before that also the E12. Following a search that has taken several years I have finally acquired a garage, and am now looking for something to put in it. My taste is pretty much all over the place, and includes E21s as well, but the E28 is definitely very high on the list. An E12 would be nice too, but rust free examples seem very rare, and prices are consequently pretty unpredictable.

Engine-wise, an 535i/M535is/M5s would be out of my budget and I like a more understated look anyway, without any spoilers. A 520i, 525i, 525e or 528i in good, rust-free condition would all be fine, as would in fact a 518i, but that would need to be manual. Finally, I'm not a fan of Alpine white, Safari/Gazelle beige or Henna/Zinnobar red.

Having waited so long for a garage I'm perfectly happy to take my time in looking for the right car, but if anyone on here knows of (or even might have) a solid E28/E12 for sale with reasonably low miles then do please let me know, either in this thread or via PM.

In the mean time, I'm sure I will enjoy simply hanging around here reading other members' posts and learning more -- also about the newer cars, as I might also be in the market for a late E90 or early F30 relatively soon!

Welcome and good luck with your search
With the greatest of respect, there are many members here that still adore the older models manufacturered when cars were cars......
I’m sure someone will come along and best advise though few will part with their pride and joys!

    Hi and welcome.

If it was me, I'd be looking for an E28 528i. E12 will be rare to find in rust free condition, rust was their weakness. I had an E12 528 and know how rust was developing even at the time.

For me the E28 528i was a superb example of BMW engineering of the time, decent performance and a lovely car to drive.

Can't help with steering you to any particular examples, but happy hunting,

    Peter

Thanks very much both. The nature and speed of your replies suggests that the love for older BMWs is very much alive on this forum, which is great! I'll let you know how the search goes, and will of course be back with photos if/when I am successful.

Welcome aboard @nimchimpsky82 - you'll find this a very friendly place with lots of knowledge available for sharing - nit just about BMWs but all topics. (y)

You don't mention budget, but the one linked above looks like a cracker. @Adie ,ight have solved your search straight off?

Also, unless you're absolutely tied to the e28/e12s, don't discount the e39 range - widely acknowledged as one of BMW's best models ever and good examples are sure to appreciate.

And a big welcome from me too.:)

Great cars the E28s - the 528i was the fastest 4 door. 5 seater car in production when it was announced - no M-cars for the masses back then - if you exclude the E26 which was really a 'homologation special' of course.

I collected mine from the factory in June 1982.

I've a kinda lost track of it recently as I gave it to a friend of my grandson for complete restoration just over two years ago.

That 525e I'd spotted as well. Amazing condition but I also thought a bit on the expensive side. It appears it has now been sold.

@slim_boy_fat: E39s are nice too but for me they aren't quite as special, so I will definitely hold out for an E28.

Wonderful period photo @Singvogel, and collecting your car from the factory must've been a pretty epic road trip!

    Welcome to the forum! (y)

I can't help with advice on the older models as my F30 330d is my first BMW, which I'm very happy with to date. But I've owned quite a few of the two wheeled BMW's, mainly boxers, and understand your comments about the quality of the design in years gone by - the same applies to their motorcycles.
