Yes hoping it’s five years. So first tank to tank fill for accurate MPG. 27.8 mpg and nice that fuel had come down a bit to £1.839. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
That’s very similar to what was typical in my disco 4, must admit the x5 is better with an average real mpg of just under 33mpg over its 24500 miles, but that includes towing our just under two ton caravan. Nice to see fuel prices coming down a bit
That is good going. My average I could never get over 30mpg long term in the X5. It was a 40d however. Will see how it goes in this. I didn’t buy for economy anyway but it’s interesting to compare the driving characteristics against the economy. Currently the X5 will win that hands down. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Very impressive but I’d take the incontrol app with a pinch of salt, it’s was 2/3 mpg optimistic for me. Still beating me though Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Managed 55 mpg over 250 miles down to the south coast last week in the almost 12 year old F11. Saturday evening so no hold ups. Didn't speed and averaged over 60mph. It was just one up though. Trip computer said it would do 820 miles until the tank was dry
Morning all, hope everyone is well. Well no real update to give on this. I’ve covered 1133 miles since ownership. We’ve been to the beach and I put it in sand mode (for the deeper pets), that’s as much off road action it’s seen so far. However I’ve joined a few green lane groups, but some of those guys are hardcore and mainly with D4’s! Potentially I’ll be able to go to one for some milder lanes (if I get time too). In terms of space and practicality, big tick It’s brilliant for lugging the family about and loading it up with all sorts. Drive, I do miss the X5. I’ve not used the sport mode in this as from reading it changes the gear ratio changes only. That said this soaks up some of the rubbish roads around here and I think the benefit will be when pothole season is upon us. In terms of behaving itself self, the only niggle has been a low pressure spare wheel tyre. This was always on even when I picked it up and eventually I made the effort to remove the wheel and check it out. The pressure was 11psi which I pumped up but then when getting home to wash, found it had a puncture. This was repaired, cleaned and replaced but the warning still exists so I need to investigate further. Very impressed it has a full size allow spare wheel with OEM Pirelli Scorpian tyre (albeit a little worn), probably as they realised it had a puncture. It also weighs a ton! Oh and MPG as fuel chats and economy often come up for debate in the current climate. It continues to get about 28.5 on average. This is one less than the X5. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Sounds as though you’ve grown to love this car, fingers crossed fit stays well behaved for you! Although those economy figures make me gulp (and that’s with me driving a 440i!) I imagine they are pretty decent given the mass of the car.
Long May it continue to be enjoyable and reliable Mpg wise that’s around the same as I got from my disco 4, with the x5 the average is now down to 32.87 mpg, but out of the last 1000 miles nearly 700 miles has been towing our two ton caravan and then mainly local trips in between, the average normally sits around 34mpg. I generally get 37-40 on a steady motorway run of 250 miles each way, depending on weather wind etc.
Yes they'd have made me gulp a few years ago too! Traditionally I'd always be going for a car that would achieve at least 40 mpg and that was when fuel prices were around the £1.20 mark. My average in the Skodas (Octavia VRS / Superb Sportline) were 43/44mpg. However as I do less miles now due to the non commuting to work it's offset that shock, although it was sickening as I was off the last 2 weeks! That's really good averages for the X5. I believe Caravan towing drops the Discovery down to about 22mpg based on feedback from other owners that have travelled to Europe etc with theirs.
Used to get around that with the Disco 4, but have been pleased with the X5 so far, we generally get between 24 and 27 mpg towing the caravan at a steady 55mph, but it’s very dependent on weather a good headwind and 60mph can easily drop it to the 22 to 24 mpg, but 50mph with a tail wind and 30mpg is just about do able on a long motorway run.
Glad to hear you’re enjoying it @aldo and hope you’ve had the majority of your trouble with it now and like @The CO you have many happy and trouble free miles with JLR ahead. In fairness the mpg figure seems pretty reasonable when you consider the heft of it. My last X5 was a bit spooky with its solid >32mpg average which was all down to the hocus pocus of the MHEV drivetrain. Anything close to 30mpg is acceptable for a car you really like IMO. Like you said on my Cali thread. I completely agree with you on needs of family versus needs as a driver but also that the D5 is a lovely thing to knock around in too. Everything’s a compromise but as compromises go, the D5 is a very nice one.
Hiya! Please excuse me for the radio silence. Hectic life just gets in the way I guess. I hope you are all very well So, life with the Disco 5. I'm about 16 months in to ownership with this now, mechanically/reliability wise, the only niggle I've had is a failed offside front window regulator. Common fault where it eventually eats the metal cable that raises and lowers the windows. All seem to fail at some point, drivers one being the most common. Parts were on back order with some dealerships, but managed through a work colleagues husband to source one, and at trade price. Fitting was £100 (again time doesn't permit me to do myself, lazy I know) and the aftermarket warranty, covered £200 of the total cost of £305. Although still waiting to be paid on that! Commercially, still paying the luxury car tax thing, this finishes next year (I hope) and fuel efficiency wise, it'll average around the 28/29 mpg mark. My front tyres are wearing down, these will be replaced for the winter. The cost to replace is approx £400 a corner for Pirelli OEM Scorpians, although I think they are now discontinued and reverted to P Zero's. I have the option of getting for £305 at trade, however I purchased a set of 20" Defenders alloys with some all terrain tyres (AT's) on. A set of 5, hardly used and one is brand new (the spare). Not had AT's before, I understand they are noisy on roads and wear down quicker. So I will see how I go with them before deciding if to revert back to the 22"s. The biggest worry I guess or potential worry is the insurance. Due to JLR's absolute shockingly rubbish security systems, insurance premiums have risen for all the range. It's mainly Range Rovers getting stolen, but the Discovery's also seem to come up on the list. Mainly the Sports but they all use the same technology. Like any underwritten product, it varies on circumstances, locations etc. I have read some premiums tipping £5k, or some with shockingly high excesses. They are at least doubling though, so I fear my current £600 odd premium will at least go up to £1500. I have had installed a S5+ tracker, hoping this will bring the premium down when it renews next month, but we'll see. If it is silly money, I will sell, however values are fluctuating so I may be no better off if I do that. I miss the BMW brand. I'll be honest I have been looking at certain models, including 7's, 5's and X5's. I'd go Hybrid if it was right car and spec, but certainly won't be doing electric! Next month will potentially be the deciding factor and then if I change depends on deals. BMW seem to be offering quite high APR's at some of their garages (12.9% I've seen)! So all in all, pretty good in terms of the practicality of it. Oldest is 17 next month, so as we won't need as much seating so often, I think a typical rear or middle rear with 40/20/40 seating (if that is the terminology) may be ok.
Quick update on ownership for me. I am still in ownership, 21 months in now. Since the last post, it's had an oil change due to the oil dilution rate, blamed on short journeys which could be partly true. No harm in changing the oil anyway. The 'Winters' with all terrains went on in November. They impeded the MPG by about 3/4 mpg. This with the cold weather fuel additive that gets added and increased use of comfort consumables including remote start and heated steering wheel and seats, resulted in an averaging 25mpg. The wheels are now off and have been replaced by another set of 22" wheels. Not the original as I figured it was commercially more sensible to source a set from a wheel specialist with 2 of 4 tyres being 6+ mm, and other 2 with 5mm which gives me some more miles before then looking to replace with fresh P Zero's. The alloys themselves are like new (genuine JLR), freshly refurbished professionally in pure black (reminds me of my previous X5). Her indoors ain't impressed I now have 10 wheels in my man shed which I need to shift. Nothing much else to update on. I've had a letter to book in for a security "enhancement" and my next service will be in July/August. Miles are getting higher but values have crashed in these so I will sit tight for now.
Thanks for the update @aldo. Guess the interesting thing will be what you could / would replace it for. For the first time ever, I actually can’t think of anything else I’d rather be driving other than a newer version of what I already have. I’ve been watching Doctor’s Garage on YouTube and he’s wrestling with what next. His 2litre has been a nightmare but loves the brand and struggling step away. With used values tumbling, the extended warranty is probably now a must and buckle in for a longer term ownership prospect. They’re expensive cars to run but I’m very happy with my choice. GLWT wheel sale! ;)
