Just arrived in BiH on the twice-yearly visit to the in-laws.

Calculated the fuel economy on the trip from Aberdeenshire - 1831 miles - 4 days on the road and used 159 litres of diesel

Works out at 52.1 mpg (5.42l/100km) which is a tad better than I used to get with the E90 320d

I did a couple of short Alpine passes in Austria - a habit to which I am addicted - but that doesn't really affect things much on such a long trip.

However the weather in parts of Germany and Austria was atrocious which meant that due to spray from the big trucks I had to keep the speed down to less than my usual 95 to 100mph.

On the Spring trip just after Easter earlier this year I was able to reach 130mph on near empty stretches of 3-lane Autobahnen.

Every trip the Autobahnen get more crowded despite the German gov. duplicating routes between cities and widening as many as possible of the old 1930's 2 lane ones to 3 lanes.

It gets tiring to keep the concentration level high at speeds much over 100mph

Got a trip to the Adriatic coast coming up next week - that is usually fun with lots of twisty roads in the mountains of Bosnia. :driving:

Great result Bob, I'm getting better mpg in my 335d than I did in the 320d (both remapped btw)

The 2.0 diesels are not as efficient as you'd think partly due to them having balance shafts, which I read somewhere reduces fuel economy approx 17%.

Happy with mine so far (320d 2012).

Although traffic on the return journey and some commuting from a hotel to work dropped this to 60.1mpg today.
Happy with that to be fair. However, if a 335d will do better I’m more than willing to have a go....

I suppose comparing my E91 to the F30 isn't really a fair comparison. The E91 had the manual 6 speed and the F30 has the ZF8HP so auto box which further improves mpg.

I think newer 2.0d engines mated to the ZF8HP would see much better MPG than my E91 ever could. Is yours an auto @Wynne71 ? I would presume so going by those figures you posted.

Very impressive, and I suppose necessary on your long journeys. I'm trying for a personal best on depreciation, but I'm struggling...:)

Managing just over 50 on a trip from southwest to Bristol along M5, F30 2016 335D xDrive. quite happy with that, my previous E91 330D (auto) was about 42/44 at best

I always read Singvogel's pieces with interest, because they are, well interesting.

His comments on the journeys fuel consumption I take as accurate: ignore the OBC; he records actual fuel used; notes the mileage; then calculates the consumption. The only error will come from the recorded mileage, which can be wrong for various reasons. But overall it will be pretty accurate, being as it is based on fuel used (i.e. what was put in the tank) over a long journey.

Alas, the OBC can be anything but reliable. Those figures displayed on Wynne's 320d are proof of the pudding. They are way out. So sorry Wynne, based on the readout in your post, I don't believe your 320 returned 70.6 mpg at an average speed of 48.5 mph. The average speed is the give away that all is not well with the OBC.

Be nice if it was true. I have seen on the odd occasion very low consumption figures, for example, with a hot engine, resetting the OBC, and driving at 50kph down a steady incline, showed a reading of 99mpg. Didn't last long.

Forgive my ignorance by why is the average speed out?

Manual calculation of 79 miles over 104 mins gives 45.57mph average.
So the computer average is out by 3mph. Is there a stationary effect? Such as sat at lights/in traffic etc?

Less than 25mpg for me. We have the right engine. Stuff just needs a few more cylinders and HP....

Impressive stuff, I did a 3000 mile round trip in Aug and managed just under 34mpg in The Truck. Clearly not as good as the mid-40s I used to get in the F31 but nit far off the 35mpg I would get in the E91. Agree about the Autobahns though, they are super busy most of the time and I too would find it quite stressful to tank along at 100+, it just wasn't that easy what with traffic and constantly changing speed limits. I'm less inclined to smash it along now that we've got a slab-sided monster (I maxed it out once at about 130mph - 8mpg!) and 80ish does just fine. Makes no massive difference in the long run I don't think.

The autobahns are quieter at night. I love driving to and from Czech through the night.

    Cheers

I’d argue I’ve got the right engine for a Porsche!:p

I'll just leave this here ...

    IMG_3398.JPG

    Obviously urban.

Although have to say on the 900 miles round Scotland it was more like 35mpg, as had no chance to recharge from mains.

From my old 640d... (which i was always happy with, again i was mostly urban and it didn't seem to alter that much on average)

420 miles into the tank and showing 57.6mpg on the trip computer. I will do a refill and manual check after this one, just to see how accurate the trip computer is. Or isn’t.
