I have just had a very enjoyably week camping in Fairford for the 2018 Royal International Air Tattoo, we had some fantastic weather for most of the week but on the Friday we had an hour of rain and we were surrounded by thunder storms which led to the cancellation of the Flypast to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the RAF

but for the rest of the week we were treated to some fantastic flying displays and i will start this post with a shot of a very photogenic Su-27 Flanker from the 831st Tactical Aviation Brigade of the Ukrainian Air Force

the star of the show for Me has to be the Su-27 Flanker from the 831st Tactical Aviation Brigade of the Ukrainian Air Force so here are a few more shots of it

The Su-27 Flanker is a cold war era aircraft that went into service with the soviet air forces in 1985 to escort the Tupolev Tu-95 bears so they are probabaly well past their sell by date in air superiority terms but in the Blue Digital Camo it still looks the part

Is it the SU-27 that was famous for doing the tailstand, like a cobra? I seem to remember something about it from an airshow I did at RAF Leeming more years ago than I care to think about

Yes it was but the Ukrainians dont do the cobra manoeuvre as it can over stress the air frame and as it is getting on in years they have to look after them a bit more now

Excellent photos! I heard a B2 bomber would be making an appearance at RIAT, did you see it, or was my info wrong?

Yes we had a single pass of the B2 with two F15,s escorting it, it was one pass straight over our heads so not great for pictures

the annoying thing was it checked in with tower and was asked to stay in the hold while the Chinook helicopter from the RAF ran in and displayed so after 20 minutes in the hold they asked it to hold while an A400M departed and the pilot said he was running low on fuel and had to rendezvous with a tanker so we got one pass and that was it, they should have told the Chinook to hold while the B2 did its flypast

it is a rubbish shot and would normally get deleted but it is all i managed to get, anybody south west of Brize Norton was treated to the B2 doing circuits for 20 minutes and looking through the binoculars you would have got some fantastic topside shots from that area

We see most of the stuff during the two days, being only 4 miles east of Witney, but not the B2. I used to be at Brize Norton! Surprisingly we hardly saw any clouds let alone any rain. The show must have been very unlucky to get an hours worth. Love the pictures by the way. Last saw the SU-27 at Farnborough.

this was put out by the Met Office on Friday morning

I did hear that Cirencester got hit by a lightning storm, and Swindon got hit by heavy rain you could see the weather was bad to the south of Fairford, I guess we were unlucky that the rain came in the run up to the fly past and due to the logistics of bringing the formation together it was not possible to delay so it had to be cancelled

I have seen some nice shots of the B2 and the 2 F15 s taken from the A40, they had a better view than we did inside the showground at Fairford
