Similar situation to the Vauxhall Zafira when I worked for them we had to have them off the road for parts delays when they caught fire through the heating system. Vauxhall came off much worse than BMW will due to this. In fact I don’t think Vauxhall will be around in a year or two Cheers Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It will almost certainly damage future sales, just because so many people feel aggrieved at the amount of time it has taken. I'm fortunate in that my 330d had the EGR checked twice, in Oct and Dec last year, and on both occasions the result was "No leaks. No further action required". Why it needed to be done twice, Ihave no idea. But there is still a nagging doubt - the vast majority of owners seem to be getting replacement parts. I'm wondering whether mine will have problems in the future. Does anyone know the criteria for which EGR coolers are deemed faulty, other than the evidence of coolant leakage. Is it a certain type or manufacturer of cooler, or is it all units? @Cotswold BMW ? Trying to get information from the service department at my dealer on this, was hopeless. Either they don't know, or are not saying. Like getting blood out of a stone.
It may be that they are not 100% sure or have also been told by BMW what they can and can’t say to customers Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
They must know which part numbers are the problem ones, if your does not have one of those part numbers I guess it’s fine.
It’s almost like some boffin somewhere has worked all this out.... and just said to the dealers, recall these cars and have a look for this..??? Sign of leak or carbon build up in egr cooler.....replace anything you find that fits the criteria...but the dealers don’t really know anymore other than that... The task I think is done with a boroscope probe.... we use these at work to look into engines ourselves... So you can imagine by the time all this has diffused down to ‘Michelle’ in service reception, she knows the best part of naff all..... and that’s who we are dealing with... Are you on first name terms with the Sytner staff Al? @Mieke my Egr was checked late last Oct /nearly Nov before dealers got really busy. I also had 'no leak detected' but it didn't really instil confidence that it won't leak in the future. I guess keeping an eye on coolant levels, and any eventual quality enhancements* BMWs may produce would be a good idea. *I remember the one for the n47 timing chains
@Mieke do you know the build date of your car as i was the same as you and given the all clear no further action required and mine is a late January 2015 build date
Hi Dave.... No I just made the ‘Michelle’ bit up.... her name is Lisa actually.... but I am sure Lisa is no more well informed, than Michelle is... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
@mach one Yes, the build date of my 330d was December 2014, so just before yours. Just my own assumption, but I suspect that the EGR coolers will not all come from the same parts supplier. Or it might be that certain batches that are deemed faulty. Let's hope that ours' aren't one of those. Time will tell.
fingers crossed that all is good, Mine is a 530D so as you say the build date is fairly close and hopefully we got parts from a good supplier/batch, as you said it is a worry that it may fail at a later date but as we are both covered by insured warranty the repairs would be covered in my case for the £100.00 excess but if it was an EGR cooler fail i would be arguing the toss and trying to get BMW to cover the full cost of repair I have just done around 900 miles in the last 40 hours and the car ran like a dream and never missed a beat we did over 400 miles today in some truly shocking weather and we were on the A 1 M around Leeds in torrential rain and some crazy woman driving a grey focus on a grey day in torrential rain and completely obscured by spray and the passenger gave me the wanker sign be because i flashed her and gestured to her that she had no rear facing lights on at all and nobody could see her
You do wonder whether some of them are lacking a few grey brain cells. I've had similar experiences of giving consideration to other road users, only to arrive at the conclusion shortly afterwards "Why did I even bother". Good to hear that your 530d is running well.
it was a pleasure to drive today and i still love every minute of it i set off from Scotland at around 1.30 pm stopped at woodall services at around 5.15 pm food and comfort break later we got to Birmingham around 7.30 pm daughter dropped off and back on the road home to wales where we arrived at 10.00 pm so eight and a half hours on the road and the fact that i am still here at well past midnight and not already off to bed is testament to the way the occupants are cosseted during long duration drives
I understand your dilemma, it's a bit the same for me, and although my car (2011 F10, petrol) doesn't have an EGR, they are fitted to many of the newer petrol engines (I believe). I was in an Audi dealership and asked a salesman if the A5/S5 had EGRs, he had no idea. I suppose it's a bit unrealistic of me to expect sales staff to know a bit about the tech. fitted to the cars they sell. Honest John's website has a thread running about the BMW EGR problem, lots of very, VERY unhappy owners on there, one even said the brand is now "dead" to them. I really feel for all the guys with their cars stuck in dealership compounds, if it was my car I think I'd be taking the spare keys and 'liberating' it!
And the most annoying and frustrating thing is, that the majority of those vehicles will still be perfectly drivable. It's rather like Health & Safety today, BMW have to cover themselves however extreme the chance of a vehicle catching fire.
From what I could glean from my dealer it is a certain make or makes of EGR that are affected (I understand there are three manufacturers). Unfortunately they do not know until the car is inspected. It has little to do with the date of manufacture. Roughly '50%' of the cars checked require the EGR replacing apparently.
Not sure which engine @rigeng has but for example the N52 engine as fitted to the 530i doesn't have an egr and certainly no egr cooler to worry about.
