It seems that a huge recall was quietly announced last week concerning starter motors across almost the whole range of BMW models. Not only a failure to start the engine, but a fire risk is possible apparently. There are 24732 cars in the UK and 197 cars in Ireland affected as far as I can find out from what limited information there is available Many more of course throughout the world. These are cars built between July 2020 and July 2022. My car is in that date range, but on checking BMW Recall page it says no active recall on it - at the moment. Going by what happened with the EGR cooler fiasco, I am inclined to be very wary. Does anyone have any knowledge, or further news on this?
Bits picked up in the French press as follows: According to the German specialized media Kfz-Betrieb, which revealed the case, about 575,000 vehicles are affected worldwide. BMW did not confirm this precise figure, simply referring to a "six-digit" number, a significant part of which is driven in Europe and North America. 16 BMW models and one Toyota model are affected by this recall. These are vehicles with production dates ranging from November 26, 2020 to May 7, 2024, equipped with a Valeo starter motor produced between July 2020 and July 2022. Here is the full list of recalled models: BMW 2 Series Coupe (G42) BMW 3 Series Sedan (G20), Touring (G21) and Long Wheelbase (G2 BMW 4 Series Coupe (G22), Cabriolet (G23) and Gran Coupe (G26) BMW 5 Series Sedan (G30) and Touring (G31) BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo (G32) BMW 7 Series Sedan (G11/G12) BMW X3 (G01) BMW X4 (G02) BMW X5 (G05) BMW X6 (G06) BMW Z4 (G29) Toyota GR Supra, which shares its platform with the Z4 Owners of vehicles affected should not leave their vehicle engine running whilst unattended due to the risk of fire.
Had mine replaced today Sytner High Wycombe. Weirdly no paperwork just 3 pages of the complimentary health check report.
