Timing Chain

    Hi All


    2014 F11 190,000 miles (very well maintained) N47 520D


    I have had my car checked over by local Indy who has come up with a few faults;

    Glow plug cylinder 1 high resistance

    Exhaust gas pressure sensor fault

    Air Mass fault

    Oil leak - Possibly from rear rocker cover.

    He asked about timing chain history and suggested new one if no previous history of change. ( I don't think it has ever been changed)

    I bought the car 6 years ago at 151,000 with immaculate Main dealer History. ( It was Lex leasing car and for the amount of mileage probably had to be mainly motorway)

    My garage has quoted app £3000 for all above.

    I do not think there is any rattle coming from chain (which accounts for approx £1500 of above) so should I leave this change out and just have the rest done.?

    Are the N47 chains on these cars better than the previous?

    Despite the above the car seems to run OK.

    I guess a lot depends on how long you intend to keep the car, at 190k the value of the car in the open market won't be much, it's worth to you however might make the cost worth it....I guess as miles climb you can start to expect more of these types of bills to keep the car in good condition

    Hi,

    Assuming the F10 works the same as the E60 in terms of logic (same N47 engine on earlier variants anyway) then it's my understanding that the glow plug error will probably mean that the car wont be doing dpf regens?

    That can lead to issues with DPF getting clogged, pressure issues and possible turbo issues.

    I had this with my previous E60 (N47) when glow plug control unit failed and found out the hard way. No warnings indicating any issues.
    That is what lead me to get my own copy of ISTA.

    My previous E60 also had a rocker cover gasket leak at the rear and the indy that replaced it said it was a common enough issue on that engine (There and around oil filter housing)

    Are the N47 chains on these cars better than the previous?

    I bought my current F10 (B47) in May on the advice of a BMW master technician (who recently went out on his own). I held out for one with the B47 engine variant as he said they were less prone to chain issues. Having said that I have seen posts elsewhere indicating that the part numbers on the B47 variant are the same in many cases as the N47 one so who knows!

    My fore mentioned E60 which I looked after and serviced ahead of schedule and which just passed it's NCT (Irish equivalent of MOT) died on the motorway in March from a major lower end failure. It was then uneconomical to repair and meant I bought my new car with no trade in vehicle.

    So based on my above previous experience I would be inclined to trade it against a newer car while it still had some value, I know it can be hard to let go sometimes especially when you more than likely owe nothing financially on it and probably aren't keen on a new car loan etc.

    Hi Shaunos and thanks for the time taken on your reply.
    I bought car Approx 7 years ago and due to my age was hoping that it would be my last car. It has been a great vehicle and has only required a set of front discs during the time I have owned it until a recent diagnostic check which brought up certain faults (as previously mentioned).
    The garage remarks about the chain made me think that I really should get this replaced as there is no definitive check that can be done other than removing the engine and physically checking. Obviously it would be pointless going to this trouble without replacing chain etc.
    I bought the car at app. 3/4 yrs old (high mileage but perfect main dealer history) and gave about £8k. To purchase a similar vehicle now would cost about £15-20K.
    All this in mind, I have decided to have chain replaced and have other problems fixed, then it's fingers crossed that I get another 30-40 K out of it which should see me through to the end of my driving days.
    As a footnote I must say this is the best car I have ever owned and even with the above faults drives very smoothly and I can hear no rattles or knocks etc.

    Hi
    I am getting quotes to change my timing chain.
    Some are asking to have the car for three days others say can do in a day.
    Is 1 day reasonable.?
