The 440i is a luxury, one I’ve waited a LONG time to enjoy. Loved the 320d E92, enough power, handling and economy, but the four pot rattle just didn’t excite me.
When I was doing 30K+ per year on our motorways I drove two older, cheap Saab diesels. Paid no more than £3.5K for them, did the maintenance myself etc. Also getting 45p a mile helped me to have pretty much cost free motoring. But there really is more to life than economy, hence the move to a six cylinder twin scroll turbo 3 litre.
I miss the ability to park the car absolutely anywhere and not care, also miss the lack of concern for stone chips etc, but that is outweighed every time I start the 440i up. The good Mrs W also misses me being able to throw assorted garden rubbish, wood, furniture and rubble in the back of the Saabs! But as the tips are still on a limited opening here I’m happy not to need to even have that argument.

I just consider myself waiting for the retirement day... ( at this moment in time anyway) we still have 1 truly great car that does everything we need and more. Just not 2..
And while I am doing this commute we won’t have ..
or until the day my wife accepts that the new Bentley continental is the way she needs to go to work next...
Here’s hoping... my wife is like an oil tanker... ( not physically so to speak) she just needs 6 months to turn her around.and a lot of work on the captains part to get to that point..!

well at the moment l am firmly in the group where my car is only for high days and holidays and it is never used as a daily

if l had a long commute or had to brave the company car park on a daily basis then l would certainly be in a different car

If this was a daily for me I wouldn’t own it running costs are important and you are correct for me the M6 is a 100% toy/personal indulgence. I’ve done less than 4K in it this year.

we have a Q5 which is the workhorse and it’s a petrol because where I live the incoming ulez has completely crippled diesels, I dont do the mileage to warrant a new diesel and can’t buy an older one due to ulez.

I wrote the costs off when I purchased this wreck less maybe but cars are a passion of mine and seeing as I’m not out on the raz week in week out I consider it an indulgence I’m allowed.

I drive a vivaro van every day so lord knows I deserve my M5 :D

I have to admit that every so often I do grumble about the hole in the tank to the engine but when I put the settings to warp 10 I forget it all and just enjoy the ride.

That said I did run E46 M3s and E60 M5s for a good few years doing in excess of 30k a year, admittedly with a fuel card but I got smashed on the annual return and the servicing and consumables along with warranty hurt but I would do it all again - because I am a full blown idiot

I really do live by the motto that you can't be the richest person in the graveyard so I think bugger it most of the time lol

I daily drove my supercharged Range Rover for a couple of years. £130ish to fill it up when fuel was very expensive and would get about 350-400 miles to a tank.

I now have a Kodiaq vRS as a daily so a little bit of entertainment for a diesel VAG product and then get to enjoy the toys throughout the year on occasion.

If I worked closer to home again then I would daily the Range Rover again.

I def won’t be the richest person in the graveyard... that’s for sure...
Far too many other spending habits to curtail that..
But I wouldn’t put a half decent car on the daily dangers of the M1 everyday neither..

Absolutely and of course it’s true to say, “it ain’t what you do but the way that you do it”.

Polos can be fun in the right place.

One of the last trips permitted before Tier4 and other associated misery :)

Really enjoyed my first year with the car, not done as many miles as I would like but at the same time that has kept the special feeling of the car so I can't be angry or moan.

I kept a little breakdown of the costs so far out of curiosity

Adding rod bearings will jump that price up this year but I think its fair to say the average cost of the car per year will be 2.5.-3k including a service but I cannot think of many things that will bring a smile at the price like this does.

    Defo smiles per miles

Can't take it with you so enjoy the car and damned the running costs.

I did my last flooring job yesterday and Tier4 means a curtailed Christmas but I need to pick up a load of USB enabled wall sockets from screwfix as never had time prior to finishing work and also drop cards through my sisters door in a while. The weather here is terrible so easy option is to take the van but bugger that. M5 can do the duty and I daresay it may even be fun as the roads are soaking lol.

Enjoy your cars lads as there isn't much to make us all smile during present times but releasing a few grams of CO2 is good for mental health so I hear

I agree. Had 10 days of isolation as my daughter and wife tested positive but no real symptoms. Haven’t driven the Touring for a month and next trip is to take it for MOT

Well looks like I may have my first problem on the car

2 weeks now the car has been on the cTek and its not gone above stage 3, I have pulled the comfort access fuse to see if its that draining it but no change.

Coincidentally the soft close feature on the passenger side has stopped working so I think I will have to get it booked in at some point and see what is going on. It is SORN at the moment so may wait a while before I get it done but will most likely take it off charge as well.

Mine dropped to the same on the ctek so I reconditioned them battery overnight and now it is fine. Worth trying.

Is that a special setting on the CTEK? or just setting the recon light.

Happy to try as nothing to lose. :)

The instructions on mine simply say press the mode button until “recon” light comes on.

Push the mode button until it changed to the reconditioning setting if you’re has it.
