Stop it, lads - the memories are flooding back. Summer job whilst at school was serving in the petrol station near the house (later moved to a garage because they paid more ) and yes, Redex was 1d a shot. Iirc, 2* petrol was 4/6d a gallon and 4* was 4/11d for the same quantity - I did quite well in tips, it was usually from the 4* customers "Keep the change". Proper old style service back then, always offer to check their oil and have a look at their tyres for pressures (you got to know by eye if they were on the low side). I suppose those days were the start of cross-selling...... Would you want to go back to those times? Take off the tinted glasses of nostalgia and the answer would have to be "No" for me - I'd be dead by now without the advances in medical science for a start. Absolutely no harm in remembering though......
I remember that change in cost, when my father was buying fuel. My own memories in 1970-71, I'd fill my Viva at the BP station at Northam bridge, Southampton. Was 33p a gallon with 'Quad' Green Shied stamps. £2 for a tank full. Peter
Ah yes! Green Shield stamps. We had books of them in the glove compartment. You got the best deals when exchanging for fuel.
Don't forget to "put a tiger in your tank!" I remember seeing lads on their bikes with a 'tiger tail' blowing in the wind, from their makeshift aerial. Peter
Ah yes... the days when the "Paraffin man" called each week. I loved the smell of his van, all the soaps and stuff around the paraffin tank. Peter
The best smell ever.....the later generation moved to glue sniffing and now I see they are using these funny little gas cylinders.
What was it they put in the tank on speed way bikes ?? tvr was it well better than any glue to sniff loved it. Do they still have speed way it was Belle Vue in Manchester i went to long time ago.
Ah yes - the good old Castrol R - the smell of nostalgia indeed. Used in racing car engines as well as motorcycles. The original is still available - and still made from the seeds of the castor oil plant which is how the company formed its name. The tin / bottle has changed over the years: 1964 2002 2020 I still have a bottle - years back even tried putting some in the 2-stroke flymo as a mix with the petrol. Mowing the grass became a memory lane trip. I remember being overtaken by Keith Schellenberg on the M9 in Jaguar D type (IIRC) sometime in the early 70s. Notes to self : 1. That's enough nostalgia for today. 2. Don't put R40 in the tank of the 330d as a fuel additive.
Ahhh, who could forget Mr Schellenberg.......... https://www.theguardian.com/uk/1999/may/20/jamiewilson1 I think I have a tin of Castrol R stored somewhere in a friend's garage, must remember to have a look for it sometime.
